If you are training for mma and will use your hands, elbows, feet, and knees then abosolutely go with a Muay Thai bag. To train combos that flow and have power while changing levels (high and low) there is nothing better than a MT bag.

That and the fact that you can clinch and throw full power knees into it, then come off and blast with elbows and go back to the clinch. You can't do that with a training partner - even if they have on a bellypad and/or are using thai pads.
(You can work the clinch with a partner, focusing more on unbalancing, then going thru' the motions of striking)

Overall, the Muay Thai bag is more versatile so you get more bang for your buck.

A Muay Thai bag is longer. I have seen some that are seven feet long so when they hang you can throw low kicks at thigh and calve height and still be hitting the bag which only has its bottom a few inches off the floor. At the same time you can also throw high kicks and hit the bag as well. Most regular heavy bags are only 48" or 60" long so you can only really practice body shots and head shots and not the low kicks that Muay Thai allows or you have to have a separate bag hanging lower or change the height of the only one you might have. The greater height adds to the weight of the bag so you also have to pay more attention to what you hang it from.

The only advantage of a muay thai bag is that they normally hang lower so you can practice low kicks and that they are thinner so you can practice clinching with them .

As long as you practice clinching with a partner you don't need a muay thai bag. The partner slips around anyways and neither bag does that.

Just get a heavy bag.

Muay Thai bag is harder and usually much more slim because it is built to take kicks. Boxing bags are built to give a little bit to go easier on your wrists but is not built to be kicked.

You can practice both kicking and punching with a heavy bag.

Heavy bag,For me punching has to be stronger than kicking so buy the heavy bag.for clinching and low kicks, ask a friend to train with you.
