Do you think African slavery by European and Americans in the 17th and 18th centuries for plantation agriculture was harsher than ancient systems of slavery.

nope. not at all. Ancient slaves in Roman times were used as gladiators sometimes, where they would fight to the death for the entertainment of the crowd. kinda like how some people host illegal dog fighting competitions ( cough* Michal Vick cough* ) except they were fully legal and even had the support of the ceasars. In the 17th and 18th centuries slaves could become well trusted by their masters and rise up to a less intense position, such as Olanduh Equiano, who managed finances for his Philidelphian master's shop.
