I just lost my beloved Mastiff to a car accident. I miss him so. My mind is like a teeter totter. That breed is so awesome and he is awesome as well.

I thought about Fostering but they have to be very well tempered and good with kids, I have 7.

Awww, I am so sorry. the loss of a pet is always real hard to take.
Mastiffs are awesome dogs ! my neigbor has one,and when ever I go over he jumps up and gives me a hug..
fostering is nice, but you can never be sure about the temperment, and when you have children you have to be careful.
if you are going to get another dog - only you can descide what breed is right for you and your family, but a couple places to look would be www.akc.org,and www.puppyfind.com
they both have all dog breeds listed with characteristics and a list of puppies and breeders.
if you love the mastiff breed, and that what you want then stick with that breed.,and i can vouch that they are truly an awsome breed - I know someday when I get a place that has a big enough yard - I am going to get one or two

Hello,
Being we had two English Mastiffs at one time here (we to lost one and it was devastating to us, he passed on from being bit by something poisonous the vet said), I would be hesitant with 7 kids in the home to foster such a dog.

Like ours I am sure yours was very loving to your family and hopefully trained, however some of those fosters are not trained and you no how big they can get!! Maybe if there was puppies (the size of medium sized dogs lol) this would not be bad.

One thing to think about is, how did your dog die of a car accident. Did the dog run free, or get loose somehow. If this is the case I would not think they would let you foster. You need proper fencing etc. We have spent a arm and a leg on our fencing.

Otherwise go get another pup, or make payments on a new litter soon to be born. They are not cheap dogs.

There might be one in your area at the pound or rescue club just waiting for a family like yours to go to. Check some of these rescue groups out :0)

Even though you are familiar with the breed, be careful about getting one that looks too much like your beloved pet you just lost, as you might try to compare them. Every dog has their own personality.

Golden Retrievers are wonderful with children and lovable companions as well. It may be worth your time to check out that breed! But knowing the Mastiff and their temperament is an advantage for you too. Just wait until you are ready and the right dog will come along....

I'm sorry to hear about your dog. We lost our dog about two months ago to a seizure disorder, so I feel your pain.

If you are a "mastiff" person and have the time for a puppy, you might try getting a mastiff pup and raising it - mastiffs are already "gentle giants", and raising it with your children would ensure that it behaves well with the kids.

Of course, if you are considering another dog, I would HIGHLY suggest adopting one from your local animal shelter or rescue group - there are thousands of sweet, loving puppies out there who need a home, and who knows, maybe you can find a mastiff mix at the shelter. =)

I am so sorry for your loss - fostering is a great idea but if you have problems with the kids you may be asking for trouble- not only that but if the kids get really attached to a dog and they find it a family that would be hard. I would see what your family wants and perhaps you can rescue a big cutie for Christmas!

You definitely should get another dog. If you like Mastiffs, get that breed. I have had dogs pass on and I have found that the only cure is to get another one. And your dog would not want you to be miserable over him forever. Your dog loved you in this life and he would want you to have another dog in your life now to make you happy. Dogs are not selfish. I know that after losing a wonderful dog, it is tough to get another one, but getting another dog will help you to work through this difficult time.

Absolutly. dogs are such good friends! I have four as of 4mths ago. I have two little weenie dogs and two 5month old yellow labs. If you decide to get a large breed other than a mastiff look into a Great Dane....they are wonderful with children!

No!!!! take a break, get your head on straight and morn the loss of your Mastiff. Wait a while, 6 months at least, then make a decision. You may decide to try another bread or something totally different.

the choice is yours ...if you want to get another one go for it .....if you breed your Masiff before his death at any point in his life contact the people to see if they are breeding his stock.and if they are just ask them to keep you in mind when the time comes...as for fostering that is also a good thing ...just make sure you get a full background on the dog so you can pick out the right one for you and your kids as well as the dog ....good luck ....merry christmas and a safe new years
