Traditionally an engagement dinner is shared between families of the happy couple. This is a time to socialize, make a formal announcement of the engagement (even if both sets of parent's are already aware), where wedding plans can be discussed etc. and is usually at the couple's home. Gifts would not be appropriate for such a dinner. Frankly, and this is just my opinion, "expanding" on this idea to include extended family members, close - and apparently not-so-close - friends is tacky and borders on inappropriate. For such an event, you can safely consider your attendance your gift to the happy couple. Save your money for the inevitable bridal shower and wedding, should you be invited to either, or both.

yes I would suggest you take a small gift and card...its polite even if they are not close friends. Your invited to an engagement dinner party that they are paying for so a small gift in return would be nice.
Now on what type of present do you buy???? depending on finances .....bottle of wine or champagne would be good as you wouldnt really know their taste etc as you dont really know them well....good luck and enjoy the night :-)

Yes, fill a wine or sprit bottle with water, wrap it up in nice gift paper, hand it in on arrival. It will be put with other gifts, some of those will also be bottles. By the time they come to open their gifts, you are long gone and nobody will know just who it was that left the gift. (no name on the tag) just write happy engagement.

I think you and ur husband should bring a gift to the engagement party. I tink that way, because if you r going party i think it doesn't look right if you dont bring a present. It's either you bring the gift w/ u to the dinner or u and ur husband don't go. Thanks for reading my sweet advice.

No gift-Don't Go(it is not like they are close any way)
If you can't afford a wedding card at least-I understand your pain.Plus,I feel all of the resentment that you are airing-it is not admission you must pay.At the least follow tradition,if you can not- I understand but your being there means a lot. After all you were invited at least you should go.

definitely a card, a small gift would be nice like $25 for a restaurant they like or the movies. if you really don't feel close to them why are you going?

yea, I would just bring something small though, like a card and a girft certificate or something! Maybe a girft card to a day spa or target so they can get something nice together.

How awkward for you. They feel closer to you than you do for them because you're invited. Bring a nice bottle of wine.

Won't you feel embarrassed not to bring something? Nice bottle of wine maybe.
