Well, you may not have wanted a long cut and paste, but the one posted above explains why we believe baptism is necessary for salvation -- it says so in Scripture.
Whether it's full immersion or by poured water (and the Church recognizes both forms -- my own 'Baptist baptism' was considered a valid sacrament by the Church when I converted), baptism in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit accomplishes the regeneration necessary for salvation. It is not a "work" done by us but the work of the Holy Spirit, the source of all grace.
We do believe -- again, because the Bible tells us this -- that salvation is by grace through faith. And it is by the grace we receive through the sacraments, beginning with baptism, that we come to faith in Christ at an age of reason.

Yes, according to the Church, it is. However, we also recognize the baptism of desire. Some examples - you are interested in becoming a Catholic and have been studying the faith. You've never been baptised, and die in an accident on the way to talk with a priest. It is possible that the baptism of desire has occurred.
In another situation - through no fault of your own, you do not know Jesus. Perhaps you live in North Korea. However, your heart yearns for God and you strive to live a moral life, filled with love. Again, salvation is possible due to baptism by desire.

im a catholic and i am still too little to receive confirmation. i believe that catholocism is a way in which to fully become God's friend in a relationship where he will take you under his arm and help you through the hardships of life. every sacrament is a way to share better in his love and divinity. i was baptised at the age of 2 months. it clears you of the original sin that the wrongdoings of adam and eve inflicted apon every human, we you are born. If you want to be rid of original sin, (you do :) ) baptism is the only way. If you are considering this it costs no money and is of no pain. It is your time and is this is your wish nothing can be wasted and everything can be gained from this great experience. im probly rambling on and on by now but i would like to say one more thing. if you are considering this take it seriously. this is a great decision. as a catholic, i feel great to be a part in the love of my god..and its fun too. i feel safe from harm and out of church no one can tell im a catholic..im just normal..but i know one thing everyone else doesnt - im safe and thats because of god

For Catholics, it isn't about opinion. According to the Church, to be Catholic you must have the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist ).

I am not a Catholic, but to my knowledge they do NOT baptize. To baptize you must plunge, dunk under and they do not do that so it is not baptize because that is what the word means. If you dunk a donut, you baptize the donut and you will be using approximately the same Greek word.
