I'm a Catholic and I believe in evolution, dinosaurs, etc. The first 12 chapters of the Genesis aren't actually supposed to be taken literally. They simply show God's love fore us, and humanity's evil and love for him. I forget the name for it, but it is actually a literary device used outside of religion. The most important sentence is at the end, and the story is constructed like a pyramid. I woulld also like to let you know that most CATHOLIC priests believe in evolution. Stop accusing us of believing in fairy tales. Learn what the true meaning of those opening chapters of Genesis actually mean, and then come criticizing us, and I doubt you'd have much to argue with.

AJ what are you talking about? Christianity descended from Judaism which descended from Abraham speaking with the Lord. I don't see where that relates to paganism...

Judy_t00 you have no evidence there isn't a God.

So you guys believe existance created itself out of nothingness? That contradicts everything physicists believe in..... No one has ANY proof that there is no God. I feel sorry for all you atheists.

From the atheist perspective, as a Catholic there's at least one fairy tale you believe in. That being said, I'm well aware that plenty of Christians accept the theory of evolution.

Well that's a big generalization....I'd write GENERALIZATION all over this question...
1.Not ALL atheists believe the same thing.
2.Not All Christians take the Bible literally
3. Saying that some catholic priests believe in evolution(i know that...and have known that for a while..thus my name..popedarwin tyvm...) and that you do too...does not add anything to your argument..it actually makes it laughable.
4.Funny how you are all angry at atheists for generalizing...and yet YOU ARE DOING IT!!...ha!

5.You mean metaphors, allegory?..literary device? yes..
6. The whole notion of the existence of a God, is in itself a ''fairy tale,'' that is a result of your protracted and secured childhood.
7. I don't like your tone!

have a good night!

It is called logic.

God = fairy tale.
Christians believe in God.
Therefore, all Christians believe in fairy tales.

Seems simple enough to me:)

EDIT: "So you guys believe existance created itself out of nothingness? That contradicts everything physicists believe in..... No one has ANY proof that there is no God. I feel sorry for all you atheists."

I feel sorry for you as well for your blind belief in a fairy tale, so I guess that makes us about even. Most things have contradicted science at one point or another. Galileo was tried as a heretic for saying the solar system revolved around the Sun and not around the Earth. Thank goodness someone had the good sense to stop his execution... Disease was once thought to be caused by demons...a direct contradiction of actual science...which shows that disease is caused by virii, and bacteria. The list goes on.

The only thing that has NOT evolved with the times is religion.

There's still the virgin birth and the son of god being executed and coming back to life three days later and all...

"Judy_t00 you have no evidence there isn't a God."

Forget about being considered logical and intelligent from now on, mate. I mean, once you disprove all other gods and imaginary beings ever, I'll start considering yours. There's a pink unicorn sitting next to me right now that only gives me the ability to see it or sense it in any way. Disprove that.

"So you guys believe existance created itself out of nothingness? That contradicts everything physicists believe in."

As does your god. But that's okay because you say so, right? I feel sorry for you, too.

Xenoranger, excuses, excuses, excuses. I was upset when I found out there was no Santa, though that makes no difference to his reality. I never believed in any deities, though, so there goes your "argument".

Before you start hopping on the wrong foot, did you actually read some of the post that Atheist are responding too? You would surely find that they are insulting in nature and meant to openly challenge. You would also understand that debates(even though these are actually suppose to be pure answers) get heated in R&S and points and opinion goes flying in one or more paragraphs. I do feel that some times they should just write clamface( I hope this is not a real user name I apologize if it is) I think you are ignorant and should only be relegated to vote on Y & A and not post a single word until you learn to write a question and not an opininated, bigoted rant.

Take what you say about christians believing in fairy tales that is a good open start and I understand that you would like us to consider your points about other things mentioned and then, there was the rant part that we should take time to learn the meaning of genesis and the challenge part I doubt you'd have much to argue with? That is purely in your opinion In my opinion however genesis is mainly in the bible to say god is everything and without him nothing would exist and you better kiss his *** just right or you are going to suffer. I feel the bible is dependent on the imagination of others.

True meaning? Pleas elaborate as to how one can even know the 'true meaning' of something that is not taken literally? And if the first 12 chapters were not to be taken literally why, then, was it taken literally for thousands of years?

That is the downfall of symbolism in the Bible; things in the Bible are ONLY seen as symbolic when science or other discoveries have shown the particular topic to be flat-out wrong. It NEVER goes the other way about.

Evolution is in no way contrary to Catholic doctrine .
I am a Catholic and am not immersed in fairy stuff A "day" which the bugbear of creationists, could not possibly be considered in any literal sense. Who knows what relative speeds of orbit or rotations applied in the beginning.. Discernment is one of the gifts of THE HOLY SPIRIT and to second guess informed intelligence is to set up a false idol in reason.
Words without reason are only sounds.

I can understand your frustration with atheists who say you believe in fairy tales. It used to make me mad when Christians made blanket statements about atheists - like that we're not moral. After a while I realized there are different kinds of Christians. The ones who believe every word in the Bible like it really happened are scary. The ones who don't take it literally are not. Their beliefs are easier for me to respect, even if I don't agree.

PS Don't feel sorry for me. I don't feel sorry for you. I think we both probably get along alright in our own ways.

First of all to profess that you believe in this mythical creature you call god is proof right there that you believe in fairy tales. There is no god and you know you can't prove it's existence. You've resorted to same thing Christians have used for ages to prove a god exists....the Bible. You tell us to read a book supposedly containing the stuff of your god. It's a Christian catch-22 isn't it? Asking us to look for proof of something in a book about something we know doesn't exist.

Because of the bible-babble....they seem to believe it all, the fairytales, myths, legends and the god thingie.

Anyone with a lick of sense would know that there is no gigantic god thing out there "somewhere" that made everything and knows what everybody is thinking at all times. And, they would know that if there were a god, that entity would be much too busy to worry about who wins the football game.
