Personally, I think I'm a terrible singer and I could use the help, but I need/want to join the school choir. Are there any tips that I could use to join chorus without a ruddy voice and eventually become pretty good? And since I stink pretty bad, would a singing coach remedy this and help me become the kind of singer I aspire to be? Oh, and I presume I'm a baritone-bass.

Well first off you did not indicate whether the chorus is a class or an audition style. If it is a class, you probably do not need (to start anyway) your own voice coach, that's the teacher's job.

If it is entry by audition, and you do not sing well, then you will probably need about 3 months with individual instruction. At, (I'm guessing here) about $50./hr,once a week, plus your own practice time( this is just like learning to play any instrument),and no guarantee that you will be good enough to get into the chorus.

If it is really what you want to do,and you have the time to devote to it,AND can afford the approx. $600. to find out, that is the only way to do it.

Modesty becomes a musician, but I believe everyone has a fine singing voice if properly used. First, believe in yourself, then sing any time and place that you can. If you don't like what you hear, you are your own cappelmeister and can re-train yourself. Check your range on a piano--what note comes closest to your normal speaking voice? Probably C below middle C, or near. The human voice range is usually 2 octaves, but you'll seldom have to use all of it. Even if you do, a little high or low falsetto is not bad--train your range without strain. Don't go for volume as much as sustaining a steady tone. When singing a high note, resist the temptation to raise your head, as that will constrict your throat and 'choke' the sound. This, I hope, will get you started. Be kind and patient with your voice and you'll do fine in school. Best wishes.

Why are you so rude & nasty to yourself ?
** you think you are "a terrible singer"
** you said that you "stink pretty bad"

Rather than being a trouble maker, I will I simply take your word for it and advise you to stick to dancing.
