The only time Reservists can live in military housing (it isn't always on the base) is if he is Full Time and that is his only job. But it doesn't include time that he is a Reservist, then is called up to AD to go overseas.

Now if he decides to change to AD then once he is assigned to a base on accompanied orders, you will qualify for military housing. You will also be able to use the base facilities such as gym, pool, ITT, MWR, Commissary, Exchange, etc... There will also be a command FRG (Family Readiness Group) which is sometimes a hit and miss when it comes to getting information, meeting people etc...If he gets unaccompanied orders then you will get BAH, a housing allowance, it will be based on the zip code where you live. You will also qualify for BAH if you choose not to live in military housing when he does have accompanied orders. It will be based on the base zip code. Whether or not you live in it, is up to you. Some people love it and others can't stand it.

There will be hard times as there is in any relationship whether he is in the military or not. The only sacrifices are what you give up yourself. Sometimes you will make some and sometimes you won't. I don't feel that I have given up anything that I wouldn't have given up if my dh was a civilian.

The sacrifices are definitely worth it. Living on base is a good option for some, but not others. You need to assess your individual circumstances to make that decision. You have to understand how the military works though. Your hubby could leave the country for a year or more, and leave you (and your kids - if you have any, behind). If you think that is something you can handle, it would be a good idea. if not, perhaps you should rethink it.

Good Luck!

He is in the reserves ? Unless he is changing to regular Army he will not live on base, he will live and work as he does now ( he works for a civilian company right and goes 1 weekend a month and his 1 or 2 weeks a year duty ).

If you love him that answer will be easy for you and just remember that it isnt easy being an army wife but god chooses some of the strongest woman to become military wives. Hope this helps and we appreciate the service you boyfriend provides for this country

Reserves/National Guard don't live on bases. But sacrifice is still the same.

I would go with it and then divorce later. Seems to be the fad for the past hundred years.

Reservists do not qualify for on base housing.

only YOU can decide if you are strong enough to be a military spouse or if the sacrifices made are worth it.

There are always sacrifices in marriage. You need to decide if you are willing to sacrifice period. If you both are, then you will have a happy marriage and it will be worth it.
