My mom used to polish my nails with some hot sauce on it.
Honestly, though, it didn't work too well and I did it up until I was 13. I do it now when I'm nervous. Don't worry so much about it, though. Try taking her to get a pretty manicure, maybe it will motivate her to not bite.

I'm 30 and I still can't stop. The only way I can go without biting is to get them done at a nail shop. I keep them out of my mouth after that because they cost too much to bite! My parents had tried everything... all the gross tasting stuff, Tabasco sauce, you name it, nothing worked. Maybe you can take her for a manicure. Once she sees how "pretty" they can look, maybe she'll stop.
I agree that it is involuntary. Half the time I didn't know I was biting my nails until someone yelled at me! Good luck.

Nail biting is a habit of stress most of the time. Maybe if she is anxious about changes going on, talking with her could be helpful, but if it is just a nervous habit, as it is with many kids there is a nail polish on the market that can be applied to her nails, its called CONTROL-IT. It tastes very bitter, but is not harmful like some other alternatives, It should discourage the desire to chew her nails.
Using a treatment in kids usually works better when they are a part of the process, so involve her in any decision to deter her habit. Check out this website for more information.

I have bit my nails since about that age and I regret it. I have tried everything, the bitter-tasting nail polish, just plain nail polish, fake nails, and tobasco sauce. It didn't work. Just try and tell her what her nails will be like if she keeps biting then when you see her with her hands in her mouth say "Get your hands out of your mouth."
Don't scold her cause she won't respond to that. You have to be really nice to her and help her understand what she is doing is bad. DO NOT YELL AT HER. She won't respond like I said
Trust me I still bite my nails and I think that if I had someone tell me what my nails are actually made of (waste from your body) and what they would look like when im older then I probably wouldn't have done.

Make her sit on her hands. If she goes after her nails again once her hands go back on her lap, repeat the process. If this doesnt work your doctor or a specialist will likely be able to help you find a solution. Scolding her will only make it worse. Their may be a medical reason why she is doing this or even stress from something going on at school.

It will drive you crazy if you let it.I would leave her alone and when she gets ready to have nails to scratch with and polish she will quit.If that is the only problem you have with her just say Thank You God for such a beautiful child. The little girl I keep is 10 and still wets the bed she wears pull ups.She really can't help it.The parents take it a face value and take it as part of her and not make it the center of everthing.

Nail polish, Aloe vera, hand cream or anything that will taste bad and is not going to make her sick. If she puts it on every time after washing her hands, she will stop the involuntary biting. The aloe vera will help to heal the hands.

I don't think you really can. I'm 21 and still bite my nails, but only when I'm really nervous. People have tried everything imaginable to get me to stop, but it just never worked. I guartentee you scolding her will not work at all.
My aunt did teach my cousin how to stop sucking his thumb by telling him that he can make a thumbs up when it's not in his mouth. You don't suck your thumb ,you get a thumbs up. That worked pretty quick.

There is a liquid you can put on her nails(sorry, can't remember the name of it) so that when she goes to bite them it will taste disgusting. Put it on each day till she grows sick of biting her nails. Sort of mean, but effective. It is non-toxic, so no worries about that.

Most drug stores sell stuff you paint on the nails and it really tastes bad and stops the biting. It has to be reapplied often.
