It comes from some New Testament Scriptures that talk about women not taking the leadership role over a man. However, I believe those to be descriptive of the culture of that day. I belong to a denomination that ordains women. My husband is a minister and had worked under the leadership of women and I am proud to say that he looks back on those experiences as some of the best in his ministry. My denomination is the Assemblies of God.

I'm a Christian. I've seen several women leading in different areas of the church, but it does say in the Bible that a woman should not be leading. I think the reason the apostle Paul says this is because he believes that woman were the first to fall, it was Eve who ate the apple first and then handed it to Adam, which is an implication that women are more succeptible to be fooled easier, more gullible perhaps. I think the reason is for the safety (emotional/physical) of a woman. The New Testaments talks about this subject on several occasions.

Monotheistic groups are male dominated and they excluded women because they felt the women (who dominated many of the pagan religions) were a threat to them. That is why I am Wicca. I do not condone any religion who shackles women who wish to go into the religious life. Most monotheistic groups also try and keep the women in the dark ages and put down any threat as being "demonic" which is utterly ridiculous since Demons/Satan were a male invention as well.
If you want to quote scriptures, it said that God took a rib from Adam so that the woman would neither be under a man nor over him, yet be his partner.

According to Scriptures, it is unfounded...They did not Read any of The Acts of the Apostles or St Timothy 1:5 and usually claim that it was Eve who caused Adam to fall. If you Read the Scripture God gave the one rule to Adam in Genesis 2. See also 2nd Timothy 2:23. Even Deborah of the Old Testament was a Leader of Men. Why? You have to read the story. God Has No respect of Person. Leviticus 19:15, 2nd Samuel 14:14 and Acts 10:34...
It was Paul not God and He was talking about the Synogogue where women sat on one side and Men on the other and were asking questions during service of their husbands.1st Corinthians 14:40...
Among Female Church Leaders in the Early Church were Eunice, Mary Magdalen, Priscilla and Aquila, Drusilla, Acts 24:24.

Some Christian organizations believe that women are beneath men and therefore unable to hold a leadership role. There is a verse in the bible that some will quote as there reason for beliveing this, but I can't remember which verse. I am a Pagan now, but I was raised a strict southern Baptist. They don't allow women in leadership roles. It's ok to teach sunday school but not to preach.

One of the results of the 'Fall' is that the husband will rule over his wife.
The metaphor that Jesus uses for the Church is: His Bride, Christian marriage best models this and is illustrated by a husband loving his wife as Christ loved the Church, giving his life for her. It is reasonable, in addition to the Scripture already mentioned, that the organization of the Church would reflect Christian marriage and God's order of creation.
Spiritually, men and women are equal, functionally God has given use roles.
Religious background: Baptist and "Traditional/conservative" Presbyterian.

but i will say this cause it is written
"In like manner also the women to adorn themselves in modest apparel , with shamefaceness and sobriety: not with broided hair , or gold , or perals , or costly array: But ( which becometh women professing godliness) with good works .Let the women learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a women to teach , nor USURP authority over a man , and to be in silence. For Adam was first formed , then Eve . And Adam was NOT DECIEVED , but THE WOMEN BEING DECIEVED was in the trangression. Not withstanding she shall be saved in childbearing , if they continue in FAITH and CHARITY and HOLINESS with sobriety "".
NOW with the WORD spoken i will say this
that is NOT being a dictator , or saying a women is to be a slave or any of the like...SHE was made to be a HELP MATE
SHE FULLFILLS what the man CANNOT and the man FULLFILLS what she CANNOT...
it is a partnership and its is a relationship based on GODS Word and HIS ways.......A REAL women Knows her place and her limitations and so does a REAL man....and BOTH as ONE follow God in all Surrenderence and obedience to HIM...
and the man is the SPIRITUAL leader or is suppose to be
but if that man is not , then she still must OBEY GOD and do GODS WILL , and NOT mans.........and be what God made her to be the WOMEN or HELP MEET for the man...and thats not a put down or lowley , but is a place of Great beauty and power , for even God says HIS CHURCH, made up up of every kindred and tongue , He even refers to her as a women....or Partner and help meet !! or BRIDE of CHRIST
we are to LOVE our wifes as GOD loves His Church
and she is to reverence her husband as she reverences
God !!!

Probably because of the passages in 1 Cor. 11:3-9 and the 1Tim 2:11-15. Churches that adhere strictly to the bible try to follow its directives no matter how difficult they may seem.

In the Catholic Church a woman cannot be a priest.
This is because it follows a tradition started by Jesus Christ. Jesus could have had female apostles. He chose only men.
The most important thing a priest does, is celebrate the Mass. In the Mass, Jesus' sacrificial death is represented. The Priest stand in for Jesus.
This does not mean that women cannot hold leadership roles. Women can hold administrative roles with considerable influence. Women are identified as leaders, saints, etc... Probably the most important Catholic in recent years, who held a great leadership role, was Mother Theresa. She was given great respect and honor wherever she traveled.
