Does the typical path start with volunteering? Networking? Or do you just wait for someone to recruit you?

Volunteer your time.

Networking will follow after they see that you are reliable. Good help is difficult to find and the board is looking for dedication. Money is not always the most important, although you aren't "required" to contribute until you're actually on the board. The best way you can contribute is to help with fundraising. This way, you won't lose money from your own pocket until you make it to the board.

Remember, time IS money.

Invitations to join a board are made by other board members. So your best bet is to make contact with one or more of the existing members, and let them know if your interest and qualifications for the board you wish to join.
