The only difference from other PS3 versions is that this one doesn't play PS2 games. But it has newer cooling system and uses 65nm technology instead of 90nm in other versions. Basically it leads to lower power consumption.

Ok the 40 gig is a good system does everything that the 80 does excpet backward compatability and less memory but honestly if your buying a ps3 your buying it to play ps3 games not ps2 games you want to play ps2 games either keep your ps2 or buy a ps2 thats all i can say

The 40GB is a waste.

If you don't have a PS2, then the lack of backward compatibility prevents you from experiencing the huge quality library of the PS2.

If you do have a PS2, it likely will die within the next 2 years (because almost all of them do die in 3 years), and you'll either have to pay $100 (the difference between the 40GB and 80GB models) for another one, or throw out all your PS2 games.

the PS3 for $399.99 is the ultimate bang for your buck. trust me i have one. it has built in HD video playback in Blu-Ray ($179 for the XBOX 360 and is bought separately), built in Wi-Fi (about $100 for the XBOX 360 and is an attachment to the back of the console), the only things you might miss in this version is PS2 backwards compatibility (if you have one already, why bother), 40GB less of HD capacity, the memory card slots, the gloss-metal finish. Oh and one more thing, the 40GB PS3 has the 65nm chips which allows it to run cooler on low power usage. something the XBOX 360 owners have been clamoring for but is already in existence on this PS3. get it..it's the most value out there for a next gen console.

The only people who say its a waste of money are

1) Xbox 360 fanboys
2) Nintendo Wii Fanboys
3) People too cheap to pay for one.

PS3 is F'ing AWESOME. You have to own one to experience it. There's nothing like it.

If you don't think its for you though, I would say go w/360 over a Wii. 360 is still a good system albeit a step below PS3.
