Bloat, GVD,, is a serious life threating conditon where the stomach twist on itself, and gas builds up.. Some breeds of dogs are more prone,, what excatly causes it is really not known..
In theory it can be corrected with surgery,, But,, there are several factors that are involved..
The longer the stomach is twisted,, the more damage.. not only do the tissues of the stomach die due to compromise blood flow,, it also effect the heart function due to pressure on the nerves.. in SOME cases it can be treated.. but the survival rate is still very low,, and complication rate very high..
Age of the pet does play a role traditionally older dogs that bloat for the first time, sometimes have some other condition (tumor) that causes it, or physically are not likely to survive the surgery..
It is Expensive surgery,, $1000++ and high risk, and even in the end often the amount of damage done, the amount of tissue damage is so extensive that cardiac problems, and death can occur one or two days later,,
It is intresting to note a lot of dogs do NOT cry out unless it is VERY bad... Generally bloat can be a very silent killer with dog that bloats, lays down is a little uncomfotable,, but goes to sleep and dies.( cardiac depression) often owners find the pet dead in the morning.. with no signs earlier that night there was nothing wrong.. so I am guessing your pet was very bad off..
sometimes.. even if you spend every possible penny you have,, will not improve the dogs recovery rate,, and the dog may have to go though surgery and a very hard recovery and still not make it.. so it is a hard decision,, either way,, but one that does have some merit.. not to put the dog though additional discomfort,, when there is not a good chance it will help..

This is called gastric torsion, or "bloat". This happens when the stomach flips or twists, and the blood supply to vital vessels is cut off. If caught in time, surgery can be successful, but often the dog dies of shock because of the toxins released into the bloodstream from dead tissue once the blood flow is restored. The earlier treatment and surgery is performed, the higher the survival rate.

Bloat is a very serious thing, and if not caught/treated early, a dog can die a painful death.
Some recover pretty well, but they always have to eat standing up, and be very careful.
Again, if not caught early, they can suffer irreparable damage.
The stomach does actually flip, and fills with "gas" when it twists, and cuts off the large intestine. (I don't mean literally cut it off, like detach - I mean almost "cover" it - stops it from performing it's functions)

the surgery could have cured him...but at an expensive cost..if the dog was older then the surgery would probably have resulted in death anyways. Didnt your vet give you the chance to ask if you wanted the surgery done?
When the dogs stomach twists it means that hes not digesting nutrients he needs and basically it was starvation. He was feeling pain becuase any food he consumed was tearing his stomach becuase the twists in it didnt allow a smooth passage way into the stomach

This condition is called bloat, emergency surgery could have been performed, if he had reached the vet soon enough. This occurs in breeds that are susceptible to bloat, when owners feed their dog right after exercise, when owners feed their dog one big meal a day, and I think that is all of them. When symptoms like you stated are seen it is an emergency situation and the dog should be taken to the vet right away. Hope this helps, sorry to hear about your loss.

I miss having a dog. Everytime I come across a dog, I always pet them, and the dogs love it. I don't know, I feel like the dogs like me. They come to me when they see me...
