woah woah woah. i just realized i just left out the details.
so when i turn the computer on, it boots up and everything, but it freezes at "Windows is starting up..." the blue screen with the flag thing.

and i have been able to run it in safe mode, but that just recently stopped working too.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Eep. Your laptop's gone now; I'm betting overheating on an internal transistor or resistor resulting in light combustion. In short, I think the circuitry's killed. If you think there's a chance of salvaging this apparently dead laptop, then before that screen comes up, insert the XP install disk, press F5, or all the F keys until you find the reformat screen. Follow the options and if all works well, your laptop's saved. If not, hope that some circuitry-crazed maniac around you is willing to buy the metal and silicon.
