Any quality hollowpoint ammo.
Federal hydrashoks
For liability reasons, I carry the same ammo as the local police department does. That way an overzealous prosecutor cannot claim you were carrying "killer ammo" and you were just waiting for a chance to use it.

Federal Hydra-Shoks. Blastedtower13 is right; it is a good idea to carry the same ammo as the police do. More important, though, is whether you can put your bullet where you need to under the stress of fighting for your life. Make sure you practice frequently and carefully, so much that the gun becomes an extension of your body. That way, if you are attacked, you can concentrate on other things. Like not getting hit yourself!

A federal LEO friend turned me on to Federal Hydra-Shoks about 20 years ago and I have used them for defense loads in every one of our guns. Never had any problems with regular practice, and thank the Lord never had any experiences with their effectiveness on a human.
They may not be the best-of-the-best.....but they are right up there in the best group, they are commonly available everywhere and always perform like quality ammo should.
Don't use Glaser Safety slugs or frangible ammo unless you are forced to by law. I have done actual penetration tests on these and they are junk and cannot even penetrate a denim jacket.

I've heard horror stories about Glasers not working properly, so I'd avoid them. In my opinion, any high-tech round is a little too much of a novelty for me to trust my life to it. Federal Hydra-Shoks, Winchester Rangers, Speer Gold Dots, and Remington Golden Sabers are all quality jacketed hollow points and are available in common self-defense calibers. Carrying what your local police department does is a good idea in the event that you're ever involved in a criminal case, but it's your call.

Teflon coated bullets??? Weren't they banned a few years ago? Maybe you mean 'Nyclad' by Federal. They're good if you can find them. Otherwise try Hydra Shok or any premium defensive ammo like from Cor Bon, Gold Dot, etc. Silvertips by Winchester are also good.
I use Double Tap ammo in Glock Model 20 10mm, Hydra Shok in my .380 acp, Nyclad or Hydra Shok in my .38 Special, Winchester, Federal or Remington125 grain jacketed hollowpoints in my .357 Magnums, 60 grain Silvertips or Fiocchi 60 grain hollowpoints in my .32 acp Beretta Tomcat, Gold Dot, Remington Golden Saber or 147 grain hollowpoint Hornady ammo in my Glock Model 31 .357 Sig, and 5.7x28 ss195 LF ammo in my FN Herstal. That about covers its.

I use Winchester Ranger SXT and ICC frangible. Both are good cartridges. More important is hitting the target. I would rather go up against an idiot with a .44 magnum than an expert with a .22 lr.

Glaser by Cor bon makes a killer round. its a copper jacket surrounding about 100 small pellets, hollowpointed with a small rubber ball on the end. i used these in .44 special when i carried my .44 magnum.
they wont penetrate a wall and kill your neighbor, and it does so much damage that even a none leathal shot becomes deadly.
heres a good site

Simple answer:
Federal Premium Hydra-Shok !!!! The choice of law enforcement agencies nationwide. Federal's unique center-post design delivers controlled expansion, and the
notched jacket provides efficient energy transfer to penetrate barriers while retaining stopping power. The deep penetration of this jacketed bullet satisfies even the FBI's stringent testing requirements
Good Luck & Happy Shooting !

I carry Winchester 180 grain silvertips. Never know when a werewolf might try something stupid.
Speer Gold Dots in any caliber is also a good choice.

I agree with all who suggest the Federal Hydrashocks. I carry them for duty and home defense. Great round. I carry a H&K USP .45 and they work great in it.
