How is my grandma's third cousin related to me? In other words, what does that make us?

Your grandma's 3rd cousin is your parent's 3rd cousin once removed, and then your 3rd cousin twice removed, and will be your child's 3rd cousin 3 times removed.

The common ancestor to both you and that person is YOUR 4th great-grandparents.

In determining relationships, the "cousin" number is the number of generations SEPARATING the person closest to the common ancestor from that common ancestor.

In this case, you would be 3rd cousins because there are 3 generations separating this person (and your grandmother as well) from the common ancestor. Using your line (grandmother) it would be

grandmother - [ Great Grandparent - 2nd great grandparent - 3rd great grandparent] - 4th great grandparent. Thus there are 3 generations separating them from the common ancestor thus third cousins.

With you, since you are obviously further "removed" from the common ancestor, you would still be 3rd cousins because the other person is 3 generations separated from the common ancestor - remember, it's the person closest to the common ancestor that determines the cousin number.

Now REMOVED is the DIFFERENCE between the number of generations separating each person from the common ancestor. Since you have an additional 2 generations separating you from your 4th Great-Grandparents (your grandmother and your parent) you and that other person are 2 times removed (or twice removed). Two generations apart.

So you and your grandmother's third cousin are third cousins twice removed.

That person is your third cousin twice removed. (By "third cousin," you do mean, don't you, that that person and your grandmother had great-grandparents who were siblings?)
