It is a comprehensive claim which is not your fault. There will be no "surcharge" to your policy no matter where you get your vehicle fixed. It will be a claim on your history so if you start having a bunch of claims over the next year or so, the company will count it towards a decision whether they will keep you as a client.
You can go to the shop of your choice, however, the insurance company will only pay a set rate for labor which is what most of the body shops in your area charge. The dealer charges a higher rate & will not work with insurance companies (in general) & you will have to make up the difference. Also, if your car is more than 1 or 2 yrs old (depending on the company) the insurance company will NOT pay for new manufacturers parts. They only pay for either after market parts or used parts. This is because the parts on your car are used & if new parts were put on the car, it would put you in a better position than before the claim & insurance only puts you in the same position after the claim (with used, 3 yr old or however old parts).
So, bottom line, if you go to the dealer to fix your car you will be paying a chunk of the claim out of pocket - the difference in the labor rates plus the difference between the cost of the new manufacturers parts and the after market/used parts.
All insurance companies do this. Some companies offer an endorsement to the policy, which you have to purchase for an additional premium, so that you can get manufacturers new parts until the car is 5 yrs old.

RE Will my car insurance premium go up?
I just recently hit a deer and the only car damaged was mine. I am covered under my policy b/cause I had comprehensive. Here's my question: Will my insurance premuims go up if I use the dealership's auto body shop and not the insurance company's auto body shop? This is the first claim I have had with this company and I have been with them for over 7 years.

Hi,I would take car where you think a better job will be done on your car, is good choice. You have driven 7 years with out an accident, which will be considered.Think of all the people who get their car fixed and do not report it to insurance company for fear their premium will go up.Good Luck.

"Can they do this?" As they have just done it, it would seem they can. In the wording of every insurance policy is some wording that all "claimable events" must be reported to them. Even though you haven't put in a claim something you told them has led them to reassess your risk and raise your premium It happens all the time. Insurance companies also keep your payment details on file. Their argument is that it's "for your convenience" so they can take your payment when you renew. In reality it's so they can hit you with charges without you knowing and I think it's borderline illegal.

I have State Farm and live in ND. My insurance would not go up as a result of one accident. Here in ND, the law says the car owner has the right to choose where his car is fixed.

It shouldn't and most likely will not. If it does, contact your state's Insurance Commissioner and complain. State Insurance Commissioners have a lot of power and can reverse the rate increase. Moreover, they don't sit on their duffs ... they take strong, swift action to protect insurance consumers.
Good luck with the repairs. BTW, good move using the dealership's autobody shop.

Entirely possible, but not because you use a particular shop. It will depend on the company. For the past several years my cost for the same coverage has gone up every year and I have never made a claim, they blame it on inflation, or losses due to some disaster somewhere.
