Samuel Morse invented air conditioning while playing cards. He needed to send a telegraph message to the Duke of Marleybone but since it was so hot in the Mediterranean, the telegraph wires would not transmit a clear signal. He found out that evaporating gas caused a cooling sensation and so he invented the worlds first air conditioner (it was cylindrically shaped by the way) in order to cool down the copper telegraph wires. The cool wires could now transmit the telegraph message clearly and the two men were able to negotiate a treaty to end the American Civil War.

Coming from a Syracuse, NY, former Carrier Corp. employee.
Willis Carrier actually invented "manufactured weather" in 1902 as a way of controlling both temperature and humidity in a printing plant in Brooklyn so that the color inks would all be consistent.

BTW - in 1992 Carrier got a contract from the Vatican to provide climate control for the Sistine Chapel to help preserve Michaelangelo's work.

We have a lot of 100 plus degree weather here, in California, and people in Texas and other humid places die each year. Go ozone out on your beach.
