and while I am very excited, I am also very frustrated! I'm going car shopping next week and I'm on a $2000 bucks budget because of how high everyone says my insurance will be. First things first, what do I look for in a car? Everyone tells me I should look into getting a nice civic or corolla, but I don't know what to look for and what questions to ask. Help!
Also, how much should I expect car insurance to do me for? Everyone scares me with some of the prices they say. Which is the best and cheapest? Btw I am 21 and I live in NYC, if that matters at all.
Thank in advance

You are going about this in the wrong order! First shop around for insurance and see what kind of quotes that you get!
Call an independent insurance agent, and ask their advice on what kind of vehicle would be cheaper to insure! You may find that it is better to get a 4 door car vs a 2 door. You may also find that certain models are more costly to insure due to the theft rate!
At 21 and living in NYC you are not going to find insurance to be cheap. Do you have a place to park, or are you going to have to pay for a space in a garage?
Once you find what cars are cheaper to insure, then you can start looking for something that you can afford. Have any car you are considering checked out by your own qualified mechanic prior to purchase!
$2000 is not a lot of money in today's car market! Good luck and congratulations on passing your test!!!

your insurance rate depends on many factors since you are under 25 is going to be high at the beginning but if you have a good credit it will help a litle bit. now for the car 2000 is not really much and nobody knows what will you get for that money you may be lucky and get a car that will give you minimun or no trouble or you can get a car that will drain your pocket in repairs. i have a 1989 blazer which i bought for 800 dollars 3 years ago so far no problems just the regular maintenance. so i wish you luck.

Look up quotes on the internet from geico.com or allstate.com or any number of places to get a ball park figure on your insurance. The highest I have heard of is my little sisters. She is 20, and just bought a $17,000 Suzuki, so since the bank owns it until it's paid off, she has to have full coverage. She pays $200 a month. But she also has one accident on her record, too, I think.
As for good cars, Civics are great cars. They keep their resale value better than anyone else. You will want a car with safety features (Anti-lock breaks, dual air bags, etc.) and you should try to get a car that has a warranty. Don't buy any car as is from a friend or an internet/newspaper ad if you don't take it to a trusted mechanic first to get it checked out. Also, the larger down payment you can make, the better.
Hope that helped a little bit. Do more research so you don't end up on Judge Judy.

you can go to several insurance sights and get free quotes. just use the type of car you may be interested in, to get an idea. different addresses will have different prices. so will where you park the car. if you live in a neighborhood where you are likely to hit a more expensive car, they charge you more.you may want to find a Friend who knows cars to shop with you.you want a good mechanically sound car , not whatever is 'cute'. a first car will probably get a few bumps and bruises on it any way; so with a 2000 dollar budget, look for something that isn't going to need repairs you can't afford.also check with the DMV web sight to see how much it will cost for title transfer and registration. that's a cost a lot of us forget when we are shopping around.

The best thing that you can do for insurance to find out how much it is going to be is call around and get quotes, they are normally free. Many people are always going to suggest certain places, sometimes those places may not be the right one for you. I had called almost 30 different places just to find a quote that I could afford. I do not know how it works in NY, I live in WI, and if you never had auto insurance before, it is always going to be a bit more pricey as opposed to someone that has had insurance for a while.

Just buy a big car that gets you from point A to B.
I did, and it feels like I'm flying an airplane!

Forget the Honda's and Toyota's. There not that great. Living in N.Y. city. what do you need a car for? With insurance and parking problems I would stick with public transportation.
