You didn't mention what you're planning to do with it, so we can't really answer, but so many of the questions on this site are about deer cartridges, I'll assume for discussion's sake that's what you're talking about.
I'm a huge fan of 7mm08 and consider it the best balanced of the deer cartridges. When I started looking for a rifle for one of my southpaw kids at your age, though, I had to go with a Sako, which is a great rifle but a bit pricey. It seems for the most part you wrong-handed people have a choice among 270 Winchester, 7mm Remington Magnum, and 30-06. I still like the 7mm bullets, but I'd opt for 30-06 if elk or moose might be on the menu.

I have found .22 to be good learning. The rounds are inexpensive, and the impact during fire can be a little less startling that some of the heavier guns. A lot of accuracy can be lost when the shooter begins to anticipate the recoil and noise from a gunshot.

I'm left handed you only has so many choices. For a all around calibre from deer to elk or moose, you can't go wrong w/the 30-06. Very in-expensive & not to bad for a kick. I personally shoot the Weatherby 300 mag, but am buying the .257 wby mag for my deer & predator shooting. Expensive, but worth it.

What are you doing? Target practice? Hunting? For rifle try a .243 or a 25-06.... I would say the 25-06 would be a good rifle for you.....

.223 in an AR-15. Recoil is minimal and accurate enough to appease the most fragile ego.

.22LR is a good caliber to hone your accuracy and recoil management.
