Most importantly they're going to ask you about your childhood. They generally don't believe in adult-onset ADD. They're going to try to find out if you've always had it and just never had it treated before.
Dr. will try to establish a pattern of reckless behavior, accident prone-ness, inattentiveness (duh), &c. that have been present since youth.

You get asked a LOT of repetitive questions and the doctors see how you respond to them. I got tested a while ago and the only thing that was bad about it was that its boring. I ended up testing positive and had to take Adderall than later Ritalin (two common drugs used to treat ADD that are basically the same) but I stopped last year because I don't think either one really did anything. Now I just try and live with it and deal with my ADD without the help of drugs. But this is for child ADD (I'm only 15).

You go to a special team that does a 700 point exam, talks to teachers, friends or family and comes up with a well thought out evaluation.

I am concerned you are going to a "doctor" one? Hopefully this is not just a GP or Internist, no, no, no. You go to those who are specially trained in this type of evaluation who have degrees in psychology and knowledge of ADD/ADHD.

Also, if you do have it, an excellent book I strongly suggest is "The ADD Book' by Sears and Thompson. It really is comprehensive and will help you to cope and live a good life, hopefully without the use of drugs.

So, if this doctor you are scheduled to see is not what I listed, cancel that appointment and log on to the ADD sites and find a team/clinic/office near you.

First of all ADD/ADHD is an invented Label with no objective. You will be put through a series of Tests that take approx 2-5 Hours and it will Cover Intelligence attention, concentration measures,Verbal and Visual memory and a Personality Test. These tests are structured as written or Verbal depending on what the Dr. sees fit. There is no scale of what the Dr. will compare as to understand if you have ADD?ADHD. You're person shows reflection which is based on on your Vision. What one Dr., may seem as a disorder with mental impairments, another may wee as a benefit to your well being. If you believe there is something strange with your behavior then seek help, if what you do brings unhappiness to your peoples lives, and yours ,try to adjust and conform to valid reasoning that reflects the good for all. Other words go with the Flow. Testing for ADD/ADHD is expensive, and can exceed costs that are hardly affordable to the average family. There are Test at the Local Library that can be taken to determine if there is a disorder problem for free. One would have to have a Dr. of Physiology determine if a disorder is present but then again there is no real value that confirms if you have a Disorder.
There is someone out there who See's you as you are and will love you regardless of all things that have happened in the past, Love is Understanding the One you love and dealing with what ever may occour regardless of what happens.

typically they just ask you a lot of questions..they may have you go to a psychologist or other therapist to help diagnose you. You may be asked to repeat words, phrases or lists of words...you may be asked to recall details of a picture or story...you may be asked to copy specific tasks. There are various types of testing that can be done...none of it should be painful...just be honest so they diagnose you properly!
