Terribly sad, isn't it? Sometimes I get frustrated too when I think of how cruel human beings can be towards one another.
I am a spiritual person, but I don't have an answer to your question. I don't think that any other human being could really give you an answer that would satisfy you.
I would ask you instead: what do YOU think is the nature of evil? Why do you think that people hurt one another? And what can you do to make the world a better place?
I hope you don't fall into despair over this dilemma. When we feel at our darkest and most hopeless, there is great power to change and transform. You might discover that your sadness at these injustices inspires you to become a better and more loving person.... no specific religious belief required.
It's the holiday season. Donate your time or some nice gifts to a shelter for abused children, an underprivileged family, an abuse recovery organization, or CASA. And never lose hope. If you can do one act of kindness, you are part of the solution.
I would also recommend "Peace is Every Step" by Thich Nhat Hahn and "Reclaiming the Shadow Self" by Anwan.

Well sorry but in my opinion that's a very poor excuse to be an Atheist. God gave Man free will, we are not puppets on a string that God controls. we make our own choices and I know that Children can't remove themselves from the choice that someone else makes for them, but it's a sad result of Humans being able to make choices for themselves. We are ultimately just another species in the Animal Kingdom and not all of us are equally advanced as others. And Not everyone shares the same fortunes in life, or values. I hope that makes some sense and Although I don't agree with your choice, I will respect it... I just hope you have more than that 1 reason that brought you to your conclusion.

Unfortunately and sometimes fortunately God gave everyone the gift of free will. When Jesus was an infant, King Herod was so jealous and angry he killed all Jewish boys under the age of 2. God could have made us to obey him and do all the right things. But, what kind of relationship would men/women have other than a slave to a master, robots to a creator. No, the Lord wants us to have a personal relationship with him. He cries with the horrific abuses that occur. we are God's hands, feet, voice and do our best when we help anyone who is hurting. Hope that helps, I understand how you feel. there are times even as a believer I question the same thing.

Does being a Atheist answer this question? Atheist abuse children just like those who are suppose to be Christians. Just because they claim to be doesn't mean they are does it? It says you will know we are Christians by our Love. Again it's a choice of free will, other wise it wouldn't be free will huh?. Just like your choice to believe God permits the abuse, do you think Satan has anything to do with it? Since Jesus came to save, love, and bring Salvation to those who choose Him as their Savior, that they will have life everlasting. Their life style reflects their choice, and I would say if love usn't involved then it's not of the Lord! Hope this has help in some small way. Have a very Merry Christmas!

I believe God allows us to act as his hands and feet and heart. If God allows it , it is only because we do. We must ask ourselves, "what have I done to help others...to make this world better?" If he stopped all the bad things in this world, then it would be heaven (quite literally!) . If your mother had prevented you from ever falling down and skinning your knees, would you have even learned to walk or even ride a bike? God allows us to make mistakes so we can learn and grow. I like the quote from Revelation 21:1-5...Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” There will be a day when there are no more tears.

Did you know that animals have no souls? It's true. When a puppy falls into a wood chipper, your chances of ever seeing him again are sprayed out the other side. Sure, animals may be nice and all but there just isn't enough room in heaven for every sewer rat that chokes on a toenail clipping. So why are you any different? At which stage of evolution did your soul appear? Some say that it was during the Cro-Magnon period

God allows no such thing. People who abuse children can not blame God, they can not even blame satan. They have made this choice of their own free will, and this choice is addressed in God's Holy Word. Matthew 19:13-15. In another passage He tells us, that it is better that a millstone be tied around their neck and they be cast in the sea, then to harm one of His Little One. They may think they get away with such acts, but believe me God will repay them for their actions and His payment will not be that nice. He can and will do a lot more then we ever could.

You have asked the type of question that truly tests my faith. I sure don't know the answer.
Each time I contemplate this kind of thing I usually wind up at the same place. I can believe there is no God and this type of thing happens over and over for no reason or I can believe there is a God and there is hope for justice, peace, and salvation in spite of these type of events.
I guess I usually just wind up saying, "What else would I believe but that there is hope.".

Any God loving enough to grant human beings free will has no choice but to allow us to use that gift. Free will would be meaningless if God said "I grant you the power to freely choose between good and evil, but whenever you choose evil I'll jump in and make sure nobody gets abused". That would effectively make it impossible to choose evil, and would therefore reduce us to the status of mere animals without moral capacity.
