Are there two versions of the PS3? I went to the mall one day and I looked in the window of GameStop. I saw two different prices for the PS3. Also, 2 weeks ago, a yahoo! answers member named b_i_g_kid said, "...The PS3 will be getting better in the near future, first quarter 2008. And they just came out with a cheaper PS3, not as cheap as the Wii." What does this all mean?

theres a 80 GB and a 40 GB that is selling right now. the 60GB and 20GB are discontinued.

the 40GB is cheaper than the 80GB PS3, but it cannot play PS2 games, it only has 2 USB ports instead of 4 that the 80GB has. It also has no SD card readers meaning if you have a memory card for a camera or something, you can't plug the card into the PS3 and upload them AND although you don't need it because you can always save information through a flashcard or a CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray Disc.

Both PS3's however can play CD-Rom, DVD, Blu-Ray Disc, and PS3 games.

Both have Wi-Fi meaning they have wireless internet, but you'll need to hook it to a router. But if you do not have a router then it is fine, the PS3 comes with a ethernet cord incase you don't use your Wi-Fi.

technically there are 4 versions of ps3:

20gb (discontinued i wont talk about this one anymore)

40gb (the one thats $399)

60gb (best version you can still get this one its worth $499 but its gonna been discontinued too)

80gb (this one is also $499)

ok what this all means is that the ps3 has different hard drive sizes the bigger the hard drive size the more memory and stuff you can put in it

also another difference is the number of USB ports there are more for the 60 and 80gb versions

the 40gb cant play ps2 and ps1 games

the 80gb ps3 can only play some ps1 and ps2 games

the 60gb can play all ps1 and ps2 games

by the way dont listen to the guy up top you dont need a wireless router to play wirelessly..... thats why the ps3 has built in wireless capability..... in other words you can just mooch off of the wi-fi signal of your neighbor...

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.
