Dear J & C : I hope I have not offended you. When I read your response I started to self-delete my question. However, the other answerers gave examples of "why the question related to R/S". -- If you report me and I lose my account, I will pray for your good health and happiness.

Haaaaaaaaa. Uncle, now we know why you haven't been on here lately! The castle wall is just a front. Does Aunt Carol know about your moon lighting?
Seriously, no I could never respect what a prostitute does but I could have compassion on some for their reasons for doing it.
Oh Uncle! I didn't even catch my Freudian slip!

In all honesty, I'd have to say 'no'. I think prostitution dehumanizes and trivializes what should be a deeply meaningful act. To place a monetary value on something so intimate and emotionally/spiritually important just doesn't sit right with me.
Religion doesn't come into it for me, as I'm an atheist - prostitution is just something I feel is fundamentally wrong. I don't hate prostitutes or anything like that, I just disagree very much with what they do.
Edit - I'm really not sure which religion would agree with me on this...

1. Many do. It's a life, and people either act well or not, no matter what they do to get by. I like some hookers a LOT more than hypocritical gold-digging housewives.
2. Well, in the present tense, it means paying attention to health and safety, taking care of personal business, staying off drugs, being discreet as appropriae, and operating like a business. In many cases, although some don't believe it, it also means LIKING waht they do. Happens.
In the past tense, many prostitutes plied their trade legally, sometimes as respected and admired members of society. Too much to tell here about that but until the latter 1800's, prostitution was generally legal everywhere, and even admired in some places.
3. Virtually every religion, until about 150 years ago, found ways to accomodate prostitution. The ancient Greeks and Romans, and the Egyptians, had temple prostitutes. today, you gotta join the Universal Life Church.
Good question. Stupid fundy responders.

1 &2. I guess if the prostitute and customers were adults, had safe sex in a safe environment, and were not cheating on a spouse, I could understand and respect that person, but not agree with their choice. I think that someone would have to have little or no respect for themselves to do that though. I find it hard to respect a business that is brutal, takes advantage of people who are suffering and exploits children.
3. islam allowed this and I believe it's Shiites who still allow this, only they call it a "temporary marriage". A price is paid to the "wife" and they agree on a time limit. It sounds like prostitution to me. Muhammad's men did this during wars when they were lonely and away from their wives. Sunnis say the practice has been stopped, but Shiite disagree.
God Bless.

In ancient times there were actual priests and priestesses that lived in some Hebrew temples, men and women came to them for sex in order to feel closer to the divine, donations were made. today many would call this prostitution. This was a form of "prostitution" that I could respect. Geisha's in Japan are supposedly highly honored and this is by most people's standards a form of prostitution. There are some underground society's that still follow the old Hebrew way's, supposedly and I have no problem with this.

I know I'll probably get a lot of "thumbs down", but I'd be lying if I said yes. So I'll put myself on the spot and be honest.
NO, "a "prostitute" could not conduct his or her business in a way that I would respect. Selling your body in my opinion is wrong and immoral, no matter how it is done or what their situation is.
I have no respect for people who do not respect themselves. Plain and simple. And that's my two cents.

In a way that is respected? I believe that is called "escort services". And I believe in China it is called "geisha"..In any case there is no respectful way to conduct oneself because it will always be disrespectful to the body. I'm sure there are some belief systems that would NOT agree with me but there is a universal "right" and "wrong". And many belief systems justify this by saying it is a part of their own culture and social norms. In Japan teens sell their body but they call it, "companionship in order to support". Shouldn't matter what reason they are doing it for it is wrong and will always be self disrespectful to the persons participating in it and other people who hear about it.

1) I already respect prostitutes as human beings because I know that they are caught in a terrible life. They risk disease, violence, and death every time they step out into the street.
2) I can't approve of their "business" because it's illegal and dangerous, but I feel nothing but pain and sorrow for the ones trapped in that life. I wish there was a way for every one of them to escape and start life over in a safe and happy environment.
3) My own faith, Catholicism, is noted for the groups who have tried to help prostitutes escape life on the street. Over the centuries, there have been many groups of nuns who ran shelters for prostitutes so that they would be safe and off the streets. The nuns also taught vocational skills to these women and helped them to find a new life.
Note:
To the Catholic-hater who's following me around, giving thumbs-down, you're not bothering me in the least. I figure if my defense of my faith upsets you that badly, then I must be hitting a nerve.
God willing, maybe you'll give up your hatred of us some day and realize that we are your brothers and sisters in Christ, too. I'm praying for that, anyway.

In the Netherlands / Holland . Prostitution is semi-respectable . So long as it is all above board and I am not in danger of falling in love with a woman who has had a few thousand sexual partners , I can respect it.
When I am an old git an no-one wants me , I might even make use of their services !
