Proverbs Chapter 3, versus 5 & 6.
Note. I am not religious at all. Someone just sent me an email telling me to read this, and I am just a little curious to see how this may relate to whatever he is trying to say to me.
Thanks.

The verse basically says you need to look past your understanding of things and trust in God.

First of all in order to do that you will have to be a born again Christian, trusting in the Lord with all your Heart requires the presence of the Holy Spirit alive and really working in your heart and soul. The Bible says we have two bodies, a fleshly body and a spiritual body, to walk after the fleshly body is sin, but when we walk after the Spirit and forget about ourselves and just focus on Jesus then the Spirit leads and guides us down a path that brings glory to God. Every Christian should be trying to fulfill these verses. When Jesus is directing our path you will have a peace in your heart and a joy, and there will be less trouble and stress and you will lead other nonbelievers to Jesus because they will see how much different you are than everybody else. The Bible says that a real Christian will be separate, Its hard sometimes to forget about self and turn everything over to him but it can be done. These are two of the best verses in Proverbs, also look up chapter 1:7.

"Trust in Jehovah with all your heart and do not lean upon your own understanding. 6 In all your ways take notice of him, and he himself will make your paths straight."-- Proverbs 3:5, 6

It means that we need to trust God and his Word. He knows what's best for his creation because he has the wisdom and the foresight- he can see the long term while humans tend to see what affects only us immediately. Reading the Bible safeguards our steps and keeps us out of danger (inasmuch as we can have control- time and unforeseen occurances will still befall us). And by listening to him, even when we may not completely understand or agree grants us the prospect of everlasting life in his perfect Kingdom.

Hope that helps.

Don't bother. In case you don't get it, being an atheist means he doesn't believe the bible has any particular significance. It's just a bunch of stories written down by a lot of different people a long time ago and doesn't prove anything. Many atheists I know say it was taking the time to read the whole bible for themselves that caused them to become atheist.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto thine own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and he shall direct thy paths. (King James Version of verses you mentioned)
I do not know what you may have discussed with the other person who came back with this verse, so the direct application is a bit foggy for me. I can only speak in generalities.

The point is to trust in God's word and guidance and not your own or the world's. Put God's teachings and principles above all else. By doing this you will be blessed.
The book of Proverbs gives a lot of good nuggets of wisdom. This is one of them.

It sounds like the person is trying to get you to trust in the Lord and not in yourself. These verses are two of my favorites because they remind me that I should trust in Heavenly Father with everything that I have. That when God directs me to do something, that I shouldn't try and figure out why I am doing what I am doing but just know that God knows why.
The second verse means that we should acknowledge Him in all that we do, that we should give praise to Him and follow his commandments, and when we do this He will lead us in the way that he wants us to go.

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;

6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

It's pretty straightforward. Trust God - 100% of the time. Trusting yourself without first acknowledging God is a mistake.

It's like another Proverb says: "The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God".

Pro 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
Pro 3:6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

If your not religious at all, this isn't going to do much for you. I think you are going to need to start with something more basic like is God really real?

'Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight' (in case you don't have a Bible in front of you). I don't know why exactly this person sent you those verses. I suppose they're just trying to encourage you to trust God instead of yourself.
