You're right, the appendix is located much lower. If you draw a straight line from your navel or belly button to your right hip, the appendix is right in the middle. Sometimes gas or air gets caught in the right side of the colon, which makes a sharp angle between going up and going across (hepatic flexure). When a lot of gas gets caught in that angle, it can be extremely painful, with all of the symptoms you describe. This is called "hepatic flexure syndrome," and again, it can be very painful and the pain can radiate to other parts of the abdomen or even the chest. However, with any extreme abdominal pain, seeing a doctor would be wise, just to be safe.

To locate the area which has the appendix is:
Put your right thumb in your belly button. Put your right little fingertip on your right hip bone. The appendix is in the area under where the side of your hand is. However, even though it's well below the belly button, you could be feeling referred pain from the appendix. It could also be a problem with your gallbladder, large intestine, or a hiatal hernia.

To find out where your appendix is you put your right thumb in your belly button and your little finger on your hip bone. Then where your middle finger touches your stomach is the location of your appendix
Depending on how far to the side your pain is and how far up it could be your stomach, your ovary, your kidney(though that tend to be at the back of the side, your liver, your gall bladder etc.

My wife had a retroscal abscess and when here appendix ruptured, they found it in her lower BACK!! Not in the front where you normally THINK it's supposed to be!
You've probably just got indigestion!
