THERE ARE A MILLION QUESTIONS THAT WE CAN ASK YOU AND AT LEAST THAT MANY ANSWERS
........ AND THE TRUTH IS - YOU CAN NEVER TELL HOW LONG IT IS GOING TO LAST..
Were You injured, did it start hurting after lifting, or bending, and you dont know if you twisted, because unfortunately that is when you do get hurt.
Are you ill, any other symptoms?
then there is also "Reffered pain" that can mean a lot more problems.
So by evaluating all of these questions, we can get a diagnosis and then maybe you can figure out how long the pain will last...
The most common condition is known as mechanical back pain. This pain can run the gamut from a very sharp to a dull ache. It may occur all the time, or it may come and go. It also varies in intensity from very mild to extremely severe. One patient may report that his/ her lower back is only sore when having been seated for a long time, or after working in the garden. Another patient may report severe, debilitating pain and need assistance to walk or stand, or even to get up from a sitting position. While one person is perfectly straight, the other is bent over and locked in a crooked posture. The one thing that is common in these conditions is that the pain is restricted to the lower back area.
What Are The Symptoms Of Back Pain?
The type and severity of the back pain will depend on the condition that's causing the pain. However, various causes of back pain may produce similar symptoms.
Low back pain may come on suddenly or gradually.
I definitely thought I would never had this smuch pain for so long I got hurt 20 yrs ago! and I am still miserable but thank God today there are SOOO Many wonderful ways to help relieve pain.
>>>>>>>and I have referred pain from kidney problems so I need to evaluate it daily.
\
If it is just a twinge- it could go away of a few days, a pulled muscle will take longer and a herniated disk can be relieved with some exercise modalities and most often surgery
PHYSICAL THERAPY- includes back school,---a class in proper body mechanics, and exercises to help with lifting and posture.
AFTER 20 YRS - I have had ups and downs, but have definitely run thru a lot of treatments
Physical therapy - landbased (office)
>>>massage, E- stim, ultrasound
>>>weight machines, treadmill
classes taught in proper body mechanics and traction
POOL Therapy IF YOU WANT RELIEF i recommend do this!
>>even today, I remain in Pool because it keeps me active and hurts less then land based exercises.
>>You do not have to do much , and be careful if you choose this because YES, YOU CAN OVERDUE IT!
So relaxing and feels wonderful!
You can be given different types of braces, the crappy neoprene that wraps around to a "custom fit" brace-
the name of it is OrthoTrac - also called a pneumatic vest- and it is wonderful --The Orthotrac is the only ambulatory treatment shown to decompress the spine. ...The new OrthotracPneumatic Vest effectively alleviates intervertebral compression and chronic back pain. In fact, associated leg pain isoften relieved within minutes of application
http://www.treatmyback.com/orthoflash.htm
There are TENS, MENS that provide relief by electric impulse and both are portable as well as can be applied by a PT
Then there are all the many meds- frm a Tylenol to Opiods
muscle relaxors and anti-inflammatory meds,, and YES
ANTI-DEPRESSANTS ARE OK (there are some that are prescribed to provide pain relief and I truly agree
Do not be embarrassed to take them
There are some pain reliveing gels- Biofreeze (non prescription) to Prescription cremes - that include - lidocaine, baclofen and ketoprofen- to LIDOCAINE PATCHES - THAT HELP ALOT ESPECIALLY WITH ACUTE PAIN.
then of course the obvious and the more invasive relief from
Epidural steriod Injections -to Surgery
SURGERY :
LAMINECTOMY, FUSION, DISCECTOMY and finally but not all,,,
a Intrathecal Pain pump to a Spinal Column stimulator (i have PUMP AND 2 stim)
Chronic pain-the actual injury or problem... can lead to Fibromyalgia, arthritis and RSD/CRPS
which is another whole ballpark LOL and a world of other treatment
I described - injury-but it can also mean illness- known as referred pain
Kidney infection, gallbladder-
I COULD SAY MORE BUT HERE ARE A FEW SITES THAT SAY IT BETTER THAT YOU MAY WANT TO REFER TO:
lol AFTER SPENDING THE TIME ON THIS - I need to restll
ideas:
sleep with lots of pillows- under legs, but pillows behind your back and under legs when driving or travelling to keep from added pressure
You can Do a little light stretching whle sitting at a desk (foot rolls, leg stretches, side stretches and pace yourself--
Recognize that YOU CAN over due and then you can not do enough too.. with lifting and transfers
There are treatments that i didnt even touch on:
Laser is being recognized more and more..
Some people prefer Chiropractor -and I want to mention a GOOD chiropractor will admit when your problem is causing Nerve damage and refer you for other treatment when he does not believe that he can treat you
(mine was the best!)
HERE ARE SOME SITES:

I have to agree here with MonTana...that's the most comprehensive answer I can think of, and she has obviously been through a lot. The only thing I could add, from the perspective of my own experience...is the use of an osteopath, which I do at times instead of a physiotherapist. 10 years ago a client (I worked with people with developmental disabilities) threw me into a kicthen bench and I split the L4/L5 and L5/S1 disks in my lower back...the big ones, and they lost all their fluid. I still have problems (most recently a simple virus thjat caused aches and pains in joints and bones inflamed the spinal cord and put me into spasm...and hospital, for 9 days) But I refused fusing three vertebrae (because it would have made the rest of the back worse eventually) and opted for making my body and back muscles stronger...to support the damaged areas. So now, I can deadlift 120-130 kilograms. But if I overdo it I know a few sessions with an osteopath does wonders...vut for me, this will last the rest of my life and is something to be accomodated and worked with...not given up on.
Someone else I know broke their back in a fight with some other guys about 7 years ago (he is only about 23 now) and is often in pain...but won't do anything about it. That part of the back is arthritic now for him.
It really depends on the cause...but the best advice I can offer you, if you have generalised pain or pain from an injury...if\s get out there and do something about it! Don't sit around and wait for it to go away by itself, because you may just make it worse by inaction...or develop eht martyrdom syndrome of enjoying the pain, like the other person I mentioned, who will not even take something as simple as glucosamine capsules in winter when it is at it's worst for him.

Well
Though sciatica is a common problem, it is really surprising that often it is hard to tell why a person suffers from this ailment. This is why it is often referred to as a back pain complex. Even experienced doctors find it difficult to pinpoint a cause. Number of medical conditions lead to sciatica such as stress and trauma at any point on spinal cord or lower back. This is understandable but when a person feels this pain and the underlying causes are as general as obesity or pregnancy, it presents a vague picture to the doctor. There can be many more underlying causes that require supervision and treatment at the right time.

I cured my sciatica with this natural treatment https://tinyurl.im/stop-sciatica-now
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

Depends on the cause of the pain. Some ways to help manage it are to take ibuprofen (provided you aren't already on any drugs that may react with it) and apply a heat pad to the affected area. These are pretty good ways to manage the pain - I am a Lupus patient so I get hip pain a lot and these are my remedies. But what is causing your pain? Is it due to an injury? I would see a physician very soon.

If you wish to understand the actual nature of sciatica or why sciatica is really common and what all these pains are attempting to inform to the body then you definitely need to see that eBook Sciatica SOS from here https://tr.im/ZZQg2 .
Glenn Johnson is the writer of Sciatica SOS. He also was affected by the illness for quite quite a long time in his early 40s. He claims he was among the “Early viruses to be identified as having sciatica”, and he tried out numerous probable solutions that the doctors presented, but they never offered him sufficient results.
The eBook Sciatica SOS is special; it moves the excess distance to help you realize the explanation for the problem, what you can certainly do to resolve it and then gives step-by-step instructions to see you achieve the treatment.
All this is often reached in 1 week or less. It is definitely worth a try.

I could last several weeks or even a few months, or be gone in a shorter time. Hard to say. But I've read studies that say that untreated back pain usually subsides in about the same amount of time as "treated" back pain. Personally, I treat my own back pain by taking brisk walks.
