My family might be getting a PS3 for Christmas. I just wanted to confirm, is it possible to play PS2 games on a PS3? I wanted to get kingdom hearts, which is why I wanted a PS2, but if you can play them on a PS3, then I will get that. Also, what games would you recommend for a PS3 (rated T or lower). Thank you!

Maybe.. it depends on which PS3 you get..
You can check the Compatibility Status of games on the PS3 at the link below..
It says that both Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II will work with the 80GB PS3..
Here is the scoop on PS3 backwards compatibility:
The 20GB and 60GB PS3s had 97% PS2 compatibility.. (both are now discontinued)
The 80GB (and European 60GB) have 73% PS2 compatibility (which will improve over time with software updates)
The 40GB has 0% PS2 compatibility..
The issue is the first PS3s had most of the guts of a PS2 inside of them.. later, when they came out with the second round of PS3s they removed the PS2 Emotion Engine (CPU) to save money.. they still had the GPU and some RAM to support PS2 games using software emulation.. now with the newest PS3 (40GB) they took the rest of the PS2 hardware out so it can't play PS2 games at all.. Sony has stated that PS2 compatibility isn't important to PS3 owners so they would rather save the $27 that the chips cost them..
Good luck..

A chip? Are you dense? Don't just guess you idiot, if you don't know don't answer.
There are 4 versions of the PS3 (this is US specs).
The 40gb will NOT play any PS2 game.
The 80gb will play most PS2 games with software emulation.
The 60gb will play more PS2 games than the 80gb because it uses hardware to play PS2 games.
The 20gb is the same as the 60gb, but lacks built in wifi, and flash card readers.
Both the 20gb and 60gb are discontinued, but you may be able to find one if you look hard. Definitely get an 80gb if you can't find a 60 for a good price.

Actually, pina c has the information backwards, I won a 60 gig ps3 that can play ps2 games. The 40 and 80 gigs cannot, you have to buy a download on the playstation network to get backwards compatibility on the newer ps3's.

I dont know what games to recommend but you can only play ps2 games on certain versions of ps3. The 40GB version cannot play ps2 games but the no longer on sale 60GB version does.

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.

It depends if you get the 40 G ($399.99) then it is not backwards compatible but the 60G($479.99) and the 80G($499.99) are both backward compatable with the PS2. Some PS3 games i would reccomend would be NBA 2K8, Warhawk and Heavanly Sword.
