Is it normal to post volunteer work on a resume? Right now I'm out of a job, and I thought about volunteering for the Salvation Army.... Would it be wise to post that on a resume?

It would show that you weren't sitting home doing nothing while you are unemployed, but unless you are doing something that specifically relates to your career then it probably won't hold much weight. As the previous answer said, be sure to state specifically what you did that would relate to your career or the job you are applying for.

It is wise if:
1. The job shows a skill you're trying to show to the employer (I managed a charity event, and I'm trying to be an office manager, say)
2. To account for gaps of employment (you'll still probably be asked to explain during an interview; have a calm answer like "They had a layoff" instead of "My boss was a jerk")
3. If you're transitioning back after being off for school / being a mom / caring for someone / whatever, be prepared to say how it was a valuable experience but that now you're seriously looking to get back to a regular job, and to commit to it.
4. If the volunteer job is a serious drop from prior employment with no relevant new skill set, it may look like you are lowering your worth as an employee, so you may wish to omit it.
