*long and pensive sigh* Stalingrad... See how much you can gleen from this paasage.
"Stalingrad - First Phase
The German Sixth Army advanced rapidly toward Stalingrad during July and August, 1942, while the Soviet morale sank and the Russian front threatened to collapse. Stalingrad was heavily hit by air attack; one raid of 600 planes started vast fires and killed 40,000 civilians." (pg 291)
No one knows for sure how many were either "involved" or killed there. Stalin's purges of the 1930s had bled the military dry of competent talent to lead.
Most who fought there, died there if not by the hand of the Germans, then by order of Stalin. No one dare step out of line or show himself to be above the others -- Stalin did not trust those deemed "ambitious" and often times, had those who stood out executed. Suffice to say, millions died.

Hey Angelissa,
I'm sorry for not getting back to you on the "mail" question you posted before about Stalingrad.
I lost my grandfather and two uncles in this battle. There is so much information, just do some simple google searches. Here's some good pics for the power point

Civilians where forced to stay in the city. Many where drafted. Many of them died from hunger and shell fire.

On the allied side, for medals? Gold Star Hero of The Soviet Union. Its the highest medal in the Soviet Union. People who receive the medal, also receive the title of "hero" I.E. "Hero Ivanovich"

The nearly universal form of punishment in the red army at the time, was one of two things. Either Being shot on site by NKVD rear security forces. Or you where posted to a "shock" unit, meaning you lead the tip of an attack.
