It does come from Germany, based on numerous records at www.familysearch.org.
On the front page, enter the surname. Entries in the IGI are very reliable, as long as they come directly from "extracted records". This means, taken directly from such things as church or baptism records. If you click on the entry, it can be identified as such. Pay attention to the dates and localities... areas shown as Prussia may or may not be part of what we today know as Germany.

It has to be German! The "Kauff" part comes from the verb "kaufen," to sell, and the "unger" part means Hungarian. So evidently there was a Hungarian merchant far back on the family tree?
