ok this is really freaking me out. My mom is a VERY devout baptist.... but just in the last two years she has started experimenting with some things (meditating, different forms of prayer, etc.) and recently she came on candle burning. she just buys normal candles from the store and burns them in front of a picture of the person she wants the prayer to go to, uses a candle per prayer... well I just found out about this, and apparently she said 3 prayers for me and lit a candle for each, lit them all at the same time and they were all set to burn at the same rate, and she also lit one for her sister so she would get the money she needs to fight for custody of her kids in court. Her sister got the money, to the cent, the day the candle was lit. Next to my candles. two of them burned at a normal rate, but the one that I would find the perfect partner and be happy with her for the rest of my life burnt down within minutes. My mom has no idea, but I proposed to my girlfriend yesterday.

There is no chance that my mom knows about it... my girlfriend is turning 15 soon, i just turned 17 not too long ago, we're waiting to tell our parents for a while. But in any case... she thought it was really significant because not only did it burn down fast, but it burnt into a perfect figure of a person sitting in front of a fire (when the fire was still lit, now it looks like a person sitting next to a pond). but it doesn't seem at all like a coincidence to me that it burnt down so quickly. has anyone else heard of something like this? not just the candle burning, but it working

You're mother is practicing basic candle magick. When a candle burns down quickly it generally means the results of the *prayer* (or spell) will come quicker. So... there you go.

Yes. The candle itself is not magical. But it helps to focus the will and direct energy. Meditation can calm your mind enough to truly speak in a clear voice. Remember that this can work both ways. It may not be that your mothers prayers accomplished these things, but that the prayer and meditation allowed her to sense the outcomes would be positive. She is your mom. She has a certain intuition where you are concerned. It does not surprise me that she knew you were thinking about love when she lit the candle and prayed for you to find love.
Congratulations on your new bride to be, BTW!

Candle magic is quite common and often very effective.
All magic requires a focused will; it sounds as if your mother's will is very focused indeed, for her prayers to take effect so quickly. This by itself is not a cause for concern.
What worries me is that she did these things apparently without permission. Her intentions were obviously benign, but generally, even the most helpful magic shouldn't be performed without permission from the recipient. It is a matter of respect and courtesy. (Though I suppose it could be argued that if you are still living in your mother's house, under her care, she is entitled to do whatever she likes regarding your welfare. Hmm. An interesting ethical question.)
It sounds like a good omen for your future with your girlfriend, but don't let that make you complacent. You're both still very young, and many things could happen between now and then. Keep things slow; keep getting to know one another, and let the future unfold as it may. Good luck, and blessed be.

I have heard of both things happening. Usually, if the candle burns down quickly that is an indication that the prayer is being looked at favorably

Yup, I've not only heard of it, but have done it myself. Your mom is technically practicing candle magic, but she's also simply saying prayers and lighting candles (it's all about intent). If it makes her happy to do this, there's nothing wrong with it.

Yes, candle magic! Different colors have different effects. The most basic of all candle magic, is making a wish and then blowing out the candles on a birthday cake. I have had some of mine come true too. :-)

Your mom is practicing basic candle magic. Candle magic can be very powerful when done properly. Pagans have used it, or fire, in their rituals since Paleolithic times.
Congrats on your engagement.

buy soya candles - they turn to liquid and burn cleanly without the black smoke and disperse the scent well. Once you extinguish a soya candle, the "wax" hardens again and you have no problems with candles burning down the centre too fast and drowning the wick.

Dont be freaked out. Some would call what your mom does magic. Real magic isnt a prewritten spell you got from a book , its in your heart and it comes out and connects with the universe. I know some catholics that do what your mom does , i find perfectly okay. Peace to you dear.
