The first creation story in Genesis 1 seems to imply that men and women were created at the same time. In the second version, starting in the 2nd chapter, the first woman is made from Adam's rib, so in this version, man came before woman. The creation of humanity is central to the second creation story in Genesis. In this older narrative the first woman is created after the first man (Adam), from his body (Genesis 2:21-22), a situation which no doubt reflects the dominant position of males in a patriarchal society. But the implied inferior status of women becomes explicit only after the fall from grace in Eden, when God tells the woman: "your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you" (Genesis 3:16). Adam then gives his partner a name, Eve, an act that echoes his naming of the beasts, which expressed his dominion over animalkind. However, this account stresses, even more strongly than the first story in Genesis, the unity of the sexes and their mutual need. God says: "It is not good that man shall be alone; I will make him a helper and a partner" (Genesis 2:18). Only woman proves suitable for this role.

It means that mankind is a social creature and needs others of the same species to associate with, interact with and work together with to survive.
Or, in more modern terms..."No man is an Island". They were more long-winded back then.
Many forget that, while the bible is assembled and edited in such a way as to be quite sexist, the original writings (except where specifically gender oriented) are general; "Man" refers to mankind, unless otherwise indicated. Also, one cannot apply modern interpretation of the words to understand what was written more than 2-3 thousand years ago. Meanings of many things have changed over the millenia.
However, the man-bashing, that some seem to enjoy from this, may be acceptable to the "Sally Jesse Raphaels" of the world, but it is not acceptable to those who truly believe in equality of the sexes. It's quite unbecoming and works against the stated goals of feminism..

lol-Then God (who is male, too) makes the animals and finds out that's still not quite right. It takes a couple of tries but He finally gets it right...
;-)
Edit: OK. The excuse I read above says that the OT is supposed to be gender neutral, especially when talking about God-that the word 'man' was used b/c they didn't know what other word to use-that the interpretation of languages is different. Have you read the OT? In more general terms, it describes Jerusalem to a woman, using mostly physical attributes, except when it starts going on about it being like a whore. The few female characters that make anything of themselves, do so by sex and manipulation. Once they're in roles of power, what do they do to educate anyone or provide more humane and/or ethical standards? They do nothing that provides any kind of example to follow.
Also, if the whole world flooded and there were only eight survivors, wouldn't it kinda be important to know the names of the women? When Moses does his thing, his wife is hardly mentioned. Out of the chapters and stories devoted to him, I think there is one verse that even mentions him having one.
The book's whole attitude is sexist. Not just a few words here and there that can be manipulated.

Trust me...as a man we need help...and LOTS of it.
On a more serious note (which would be c#..always thought of that note as being particularly serious for some reason) the point of that statement from Genesis is really summed up in the first part "It is not good for Man to be alone." Think about it, think about what lonely men do. They invent weapons of mass destruction, the go out and rob, rape and destroy. Ronald Reagan and Leonid Breshniv were both happily married men and they worked for peace between their two countries. Adolph Hitler was a sad and lonely man (despite the presence of Eva Braum and look at his actions. Do we see the pattern?
Regardless of one's belief in any religion, or in no religion, regardless in ones stance on gender orientation one thing is pretty clear in all cases, a man by himself is NEVER a good thing and will inevitably lead to trouble.
"It is not good for man to be alone." So profound a truth summed up in so few words, simple yet eloquent in that simplicity.

Good question and I gave it a star.
In my view that verse is very deep and does have a lot of views. Your stated opinion on man needing a lot of help is one of the many views.
I personally can see in these words the reason and purpose for all the creation that does exist such as but not limited to:
Plants
Animals
Woman
Jesus
Family
Air to breath
Food to eat
The sun, moon and all heavenly bodies
The church [meaning the body of Christ]
Governments,
The list is endless - -
In all this I do believe the deepest of all is the requirement for Mr Adam to eat of the fruit so man could learn and understand that man's real need was for a God to exist, a God who means what he says and says what he means. Added to this is the ability of the Spirit of God to serve as a guide and the fact that Jesus was the pure justification to establish the God is a just God, fully justified in perfect justice.
Yes I do see it as very profound words.

of corse men need help... number one... the world is being ruled by satan the devil... he is constantly tempting us and trying to turn us from god.. without him it would be hard to fight off satans temptations...

Haha. Honestly no. It means that there is always a perfect counterpart to an individual. In this case man was created before women (if women had been created before men then we'd be given a helper. )
Go created women as the counterpart to a man. Now everything is twisted. God let any man have any women but they choose to be with another man. We never said let the white skins only be with the white skins or te black hairs with the blacks hairs. He let man be with any woman but in the end men choose a another man or vice versa.

It means that of all that the "Lord God" had made there was one thing that was not good. As God's nature is triune, so also would his relationship to man be. God to man, man to wife. Husbands lays down life; wife submits to husband. It is the same relationship as God the Father to God the son.
Eph 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. Tardis girl needs a clue.
