Perhaps this person meant "chicken" instead of "rooster" so let me help out a bit.

Chickens (be they hens or roosters) have no outside parts that would help you sort one from the other like you might with dogs or cats. Everything they use is inside. Large chicks can be sexed the day they are hatched (bantams can not be because they are too small), but it takes a lot of training to do it. Some birds can be sexed early by their color, but those are special circumstances. But otherwise, one chicken's vent (hole in their back side) looks pretty much like another's.

Combs: In GENERAL, and only within the same breed, a male will have a larger and redder comb than a female, and in single comb birds (the regular comb you see on most chickens), this can give it away at 4 weeks. But even then, in some breeds (my orpingtons), what you thought was a girl turns out later to be a boy because it matured slowly.

In some breeds, the comb does not help, and I perfer to sex by looking for male feathering. Males (except Sebrights and a few others) eventually grow pointed feathers over their backs and alongside their tails.

For some you have to wait until they are all grown up. Silkies have almost no comb, and when they do, they don't mature early. Also, because their feathers look like hair instead, you can't rely on pointy feathers, and female silkies often have a larger tail than the males. So, what then. Unfortunately, sometimes the only way to be sure is to wait for the bird to either crow or lay an egg.

And trust me, if your bird is all grown up, it would be crowing if it is a rooster.

Good luck and happy poultry

I hate to sound like a broken record here, but ALL ROOSTERS ARE MALES. The females are those small ones called hens. There is a really easy way to tell the roosters and hens apart and that is their size and their physical appearance. The males are much larger and slimmer and the females are fatter and smaller. That and they lay eggs.

Are they young? If they are young it is harder to tell. But if they are mature, you will notice that the males have more of a solid feather in their tails. It looks the feathers were stripped, rather than being all fluffy as in the hens. The males will get a large walnut comb, that have 2 very small points on the top of them. I raise silkies, and sometimes I cant find them. The males will also develop spurs. Also, the males will usually have longer pointed feathers coming off of their top knot (the fluffy crest) going in the direction if their neck. Overall, the males will have more solid feathers than the hen, which should have none. They will also be bigger in size. If they are breeding, then they are definitely males. But all of this (besides the breeding) depends on the quality of the silkies. Show quality silkies or birds that are pure silkie will have these qualities. If they are cross breeds, then their may be no telling until they grow up! Good luck!

PUT THE ROOSTER IN A CAGE OUTSIDE YOUR BEDROOM WINDOW. SET YOUR ALARM FOR 4:30 A.M.. IF THE BIRD STARTS CALLING "BWAAWK-A-DOODLE-DOO" WHEN THE SUN STARTS TO COME UP, HE'S A MALE ROOSTER. ((BELIEVE IT OR NOT THE WEBSITE CENSORED THE "C' WORD))

Stick your leg out. If it attacks it and latches on with its spurs it's a "male" rooster.
