My boss consantly puts me down, and complains to me about the way i'm doing things. He tells my co-workers that i am the hardest worker and that i do a great job with everthing i do. i don't understand.

If it helps to answer, i work in a garden center!

He's not a good boss. There's no reason that you should have to listen to that, its verbal abuse. If you're not doing a good job you should be fired or given a warning...you're not a punching bag.

Maybe he thinks his complaining is constructive criticism and he thinks he is mentoring you because you have more potential than the others...

He appreciates your work and wants you to do better still.

Because he's pushing you. He's probably afraid that if he told you the truth you might get cocky or lazy. Don't worry about it you'll be up for promotion soon. :D

Maybe he's internally insecure himself, and so he puts you down to feel better about himself. Maybe he's scared he'll lose his job to you.
