I am a college student (not majoring in photography if that helps, just consider it a hobby), and I enjoy taking artistic photos as well as taking photos when I travel. I've searched a few different brands but have yet to find a camera that has what I'm looking for and still had good reviews. I would like one that has a large optical zoom (I have never had a fondness for using the digital zoom much), takes clear pictures (image stabilizer) and has plenty of different options when it comes to taking the actual pictures (as in outdoors, aquatic, etc...)
I am also interested in something that isn't too large so it would be easy for my to take on trips. I have had past problems with digital cameras taking a long time between pictures. And as a bonus, is there a camera with a fish eye lens attachment or feature?

Is there a camera that fits my needs or am I just too picky??

I have a Canon EOS 1000D. Its a great entry level camera that takes beautiful photos. I got mine for $998 a year ago and it comes with 2 lenses a 18-55mm and a 75-300mm lense which is perfect and all you need to take great shots. At the moment You can get it for about $700 maybe. Its a great camera and does the trick. I got it for a photography course I was doing.

Most of the mid-range newer cameras and certainly those with image stablization will take pictures much faster than previous versions. I have a fairly old Nikon 995 which takes repeat pictures fairly quickly, but when I try to grab a picture quickly as I used to do with a manual film camera, I don't get the animal or get a picture of the floor or sky as it was taken after I moved the camera.

Since you want something that will shoot instantly, without that annoying pause where you are waiting for the camera to take the picture (and your subject is all artificial and frozen-looking because the circumstances are artificial and posed), then you want either a Nikon D40 or a Canon XTi. Neither is "better" than the other, but I find the Nikon to be more user-friendly.

Definitely Canon!

Check out the new G9, but also the S5is, which has twice the optical zoom range of the G9 but lower megapixels.

I have the older S3is and love it. It's a great pocket (not shirt pocket!) sized camera, well designed and sturdy as hell!
12X optical, IS, all the auto and manual features you need. The S5 also has a hot shoe - which I really wish my S3 had.

For my pro work I still shoot with a full sized Nikon DSLR, but that little S3is is always with me.

get the Nikon D40. You get a lens with it for about $400 online. do a search for this model online and you'll get some cheap prices. If you don't want to go with one of the online places, take your quote to CDW and they'll match your price.

The D40 is what you want..it has a built in flash and offers good Nikon quality.

You can go to some camera stores and pick up some older Nikon lenses that will work. they are backwards compatible.

get a 2gig card and you'll be on your way to lots of pictures!

If you don't mind some size try the Canon EOS, you can purchase different lenses. I have one and it has all of those functions and takes wonderful pics.

Good luck.

Canon is the way to go. Look at the PowerShots. They are pretty good.
