Could have, but it would have taken a few decades for those of his Generation to die off.
That way stories about him could begin to have an air of supernatural events, and miracles could exist.

Gandhi's success was only possible due to this modern media and because the British were not really all that bad. If Gandhi had tried that against others, for example in Nazi Germany, he would have been executed and you would have probably never have heard of him.
It is pretty amazing that a man of no great earthly importance was executed in a disgraceful manner, like many other criminals of the time, and yet he has had an enormous influence on the thinking of humanity for around 2,000 years. That sort of testifies to the fact that maybe he had something more to testify to than just non-violence.

Gandhi never claimed to be any more than a man, and after he died, he stayed dead.
Why would ANY body WILLINGLY allow himself to be martyred for something he knew absolutely to be a lie???
Why would people rather be thrown to the lions then renounce Jesus?
Why would Peter, who - if the what the critics say is true - helped steal the body of Jesus and hide it away somewhere to purpetrate the lie that he rose from the grave the morning of the 3rd day, be willing to be crucified upside down, knowing he was being torchured and he would die for a lie?
Why would Stephen allow himself to be stoned to death, rather than renounce Jesus, unless he knew something you don't know?
Gandhi has no claim to fame. Jesus does. Gandhi was a mere mortal, and he is still dead to this day. Jesus is alive.

Just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't. Jesus wouldn't have wanted a religion built up around him, but it took time and distance from the real truth for the legend and myth to accrue.

No because his teachings are already based on a religion.

Well, I think Matt Stone & Trey (writters of South Park) are modern day prophets; a little sick, but they've got their cult going strong on Commedy Central.

I don't think so. Well.. You can't really make hypothetical situations like that. If Jesus had been born now he would have spent his life in a mental hospital. The difference in time means that you can't really understand another.

I doubt it. The Brits would not have been in India yet, and he couldn't have gone to South Africa to become a lawyer!

Gandhi already had a faith - he was Sikh. And his "teachings" were based on Tolstoy's theology of Jesus (please look it up before you just register a thumbs down).
