Twice, YEARS ago- when I was 16 and I think 17. I went to Mexico with a group of people from the church I was attending. I loved it! We helped build a church, I remember sitting on the roof helping nail in nails. It was a very run down area, the kids lived in little shacks, and it was all dirt floors. It was very sad. We brought them food and toys-- we sang songs with them in the little church we were building, shared the gospel....I remember just spending time with them and seeing the JOY on their faces that people were there to help. They had absolutely nothing and were happier than most people I know who have everything.
THAT is a lesson to be learned.
They all had MUCH joy for the Lord and seemed to truly love Him- they knew He was taking care of them, no matter what.
Such a poor area we visited but the attitudes and emotions there were VERY RICH- you could see the love of Christ shine through their faces.

Several - both long term (several months) and short term (a week or two). I've been to several places in the Middle East, Africa, South America as well as Haiti and a few places here in the US. Like is not exactly the word I'd use, since the work was usually hard and the conditions not always comfortable (and I won't EVEN talk about some of the food I've had to eat, since I could qualify as one of the worlds pickiest eaters) - but it was always rewarding - and I always came away with much more than I gave.
Would I return? Most times I did - and if the opportunity presents itself again, most likely I would again.

When I was a teenager in the 60's and early 70's I was on some Methodist youth missions in New Mexico and west Texas. I loved it. I got laid alot by really cute Jesus groupie girls (no kidding). I became a Buddhist very soon after. I stopped getting laid as much, and now it seldom happens. I use to think I'd go back for the sex but I'm past that now.

When I was a Christian, I went to Guyana for 2 weeks and 'preached' to the poor.

Looking back, it was really just a way for the organizer to make a little cash and for us to have some fun. We dug a ditch for 2 days, and spend the rest of the time sight seeing and lounging on the beach.

I guess the ditch was valuable for something, but in reality, we didn't have much of an effect on the local population, other than to highlight how lucky we were to live in the USA.

Of course, at the time, I was full of righteousness and pride about my selflessness.

Actually kinda of yes. The best missions can sometimes be in your own country. I've served under Lift High the Cross hot air balloon lots of times and seen alot of really good things. I loved every moments like it and would do every day if at all possible.

Yes, and I highly recommend it.

There are all kinds of organizations such as YWAM (Youth With A Mission), OM (Operation Mobilization), WWEC (World Wide Evangelistic Crusade), Bethany College of Missions, and many others.

Go for it :-)

I've been to Romania. It was the most amazing experience of my life and I'm planning on going back during spring break and over the summer again. It was just awesome to watch God work over the time we were there.

Sure...and, you don't have to go really "far" to be on a "missions" trip either...i have been to various places in the US, and yes, there are some places i wouldn't mind going back to...but..over seas? now, this is another thing...it's farther, and the Lord hasn't directed me in this direction as of yet, but, if he does..well, ....how could i say no..."Peace!"
