Family pictures?...

Explain how 99% of family pictures are taken from eye-level and that the photograph would benifit from a differnt point of view

Explain that people rarely pay attention to the light and sometimes get nasty, backlit pictures shooting into the sun.

Explain that people should use fill flash on cloudy days for warm up the subject and prevent against back-lighting from the bright, overcast sky.

Explain that people should try a slow-sync flash setting at night, to give context and add neat blur effects.

Talk about composing with the subjects not in the dead center.

Call your library and ask if they have any books by Monte Zucker. He was a Master Portrait Photographer. He should have some excellent examples of posing family groups.
