Yoga is a method. There are different yogas for different purposes. There is hatha yoga for peaceful strength, balance, and flexibility. There is dynamic yoga and pilates for energy. There is yoga for intimate couples, for warriors, for kings, for doctors, and for priests. Each is a set of methods tested over the centuries.

Yoga mean union from the Sanskrit root "yuj" to unite. What is united is 1.) the self, as in self-integration and 2.) the self and a divine ideal (God or some other concept of a spiritual ideal--not all forms of yoga arose from theistic spiritual philosophies). Forms of yoga outlined in the Bhagavad Gita are Jnana, Bhakti, and Karma: the spiritual integration through gnosis (Jnana yoga), through devotionalism (Bhakti yoga), and through pious ritual ceremony (Karma yoga; later reinterpreted as spiritual integration through selfless work or good works). These forms of yoga and raja yoga (meditation), which was outlined in a tract called the Yoga Sutras have nothing to do with physical exercise--as yoga has come to be known in the west. '

Hatha yoga (Hatha means sun-moon and is a reference to "solar" and "lunar" principles in the body [afferent and efferent functions) was originally a form of Tantric mysticism that involved transformation of the spiritual self through transformation of the physical self. Besides physical exercises meant to transcend the limitations of the body, it included numerous sometimes bizarre hygienic practices to "cleanse" the body (collectively referred to as called shat karma) and various other observances. The goal was to achieve the "diamond body" --to be completely free of physical limitations and to achieve spiritual and physical "liberation." Hatha yoga was also somewhat tied in with Kundalini yoga --an esoteric form of yoga that has to do with psychic and bioenergetic dynamics leading to transformation of consciousness. Today, in the West, however, yoga is often nothing more than performing certain stretching exercises at a gym a few times a week or else--one step up--going to a yoga studio to meditate and chant in Sanskrit after doing your stretcing and breathing techniques. One step up from that is involvement in some modern-day yoga/guru cult and doing the founder's version of yoga exercises and following his particular trip on yoga philosophy.

Yoga means "to yoke." It's about Spiritual union.

Jesus said, "take my yoke." And in all probability he was speaking about a spiritual union as well. "I am in the Father, you are in me, and I am in you." That's about spiritual union. But that part of the gospel has been overlooked these days.

But yoga is about various practices that help bring about this union, and is closely related to the Original Kingdom Gospel that Jesus was preaching.
