Jim Jones Peoples Temple had armed guards. Some of the Polygamist cults in the 4 corners area do as well.

As another answerer said, a smart one. Look at the world we live in. Children are not safe in school. Shoppers are not safe in a mall. Think about some of the mass shootings we've had and how many lives could have been saved if a responsible person had a weapon.

God Bless.

in this day and age?... any congregation should take whatever security measures it can... that is why Constitutional Concealed Carry Permits are so important... if there had been even one holder of such a permit who was armed in the mall in Saltlake City fewer would have been shot.... I pitty the nut case who would concider entering most of the Congregations I know with the intent of mass murder... he would get off a few rounds... but he would be sent to judgment very quickly... as very many of the Christians I know are lawfully armed.
The Pastor of our congregation as an Army Chaplin... he is not permitted to carry a weapon in uniform... and once a month he preaches in uniform... on that day,if such an attack occured, he would pray for the family of the departed mad man.... after the several members of the congregation, who are well trained ex military, took care of such an intruder.

It is unfortunate that within the past couple decades mankind has gotten to a point of such callousness and cruelty that armed guards are needed not only in churches, but in schools as well as attacks and gang violence continue to escalate against innocent people minding to their own business.

I thought I was the only one bugged by this--I never heard of such!

I suppose if that particular church had been threatened in some way, the congregation might take steps to tighten up security, but I'm troubled by the armed guards myself!

Only other comparison I can make is the Vatican with the Pope's special guards and his bullet-proof Pope-mobile.

My LDS church building in Caracas Venezuela had armed security guards after having experienced several armed break ins. This was 23 years ago.

Scientology....And so what if a church has security guards....If God made heaven and earth and everything on earth & he is all powerful and wise....how come he lets things like those shootings happen....Security guards? Good Idea...? Why, I think so! Maybe we shouldn't trust this God we love so much...ever think of that?
Just a thought!

A better question is why didn't the armed guard pray for god to intervene and stop this person himself. After all god is all-powerful, god could have shined a heavenly light on the suspect to show him the error of his way rather than have the armed person shoot the suspect.

The kind that faces the unfortunate realities of today's society. Whenever there are large groups of people gathering, the nuts seem to come out to "prove something"..

In a pit of vipers one is wise to wear clothing that is snake proof. In an environment of thugs [who are allowed to exist by Liberal-Type Personality types] then one is wise to make ones environment as thug-proof as possible.

Congratulations to the church for assuming the Yang energy the environment is too fearful to assert.

Peace
