Staff who work at nonprofits collect salaries. The target group being served by the organization can profit by the activities of the nonprofit. The organization itself can put aside excess revenue towards future funding or starting or expanding new projects.

Legally, you as the person who creates a non-profit may not personally benefit from the activities of the organization.

It depends on your honesty and your true interest in helping others. Some non-profit organizations can be so efficient that they can make 85% to 90% of the money they collect to reach the persons intended to be benefited by them. They do so by many obtaining voluntary work and by adequate administration. I usually prefer to contribute to these.
