Dachshund or Miniature Pinscher! Both are very good little guard dogs and very loving.

I have a 4-year old miniature pinscher, and he weighs about 10 lbs.

An American Pit Bull Terrier. I have two and they are the most loving dogs in the world. Maybe a bit bigger then you want, mine are in the 50-60 lb range. A Beagle is a real loving clown and are 20-25 lbs. And don't knock the Great Dane. They are a good apartment dog as they are pretty laid back. You have to take them out for exercise as you have to do with any dog.
Have fun with your new dog.

Whenever I look for a dog or cat, I always go to the humane society or animal control. When you adopt a pet, the money you pay includes the shots, and the spay/neuter, plus you're saving a dog's life. Mixed breeds are the friendliest I think, and you can find small dogs at the humane society. Hope you think about this seriously. So many unwanted dogs, bring home a dog that will love you so much for rescuing it. Good luck.

Bull-dogs and pugs are some of the best dogs for apartment living. They don't require alot of exercise and are extremely loyal. If you are not a fan of the smush-faced pups, check out the website below, it will help you find the right type of dog based on several factors:

Then do some more specific research on the breed to be sure you've made the right choice. Have fun!

There is no such thing as the 'best' dog LOL. If you ask me, mine is the best :)

The best dog for you is the one that fits into your lifestyle. Grooming, shedding, excersize, training, breed background all come into making the choice that's best for you. The best bet is to determine what you can live with and what you can't, then do research from there. There are lots of good places to look for information on breeds and the AKC is a good place to start. And I'd consider getting a dog or pup from a rescue..there are so many excellent dogs out there looking for homes. Good luck :)

You should Google for websites that give you a little quiz on what you are looking for in a dog. Be completely truthful with your answers. Then from the breeds suggested, you can begin to narrow the field. Then, go to www.petfinder.com to find your new best friend and save a life!! You can find everything from mixed breeds to purebred dogs there, all desperately wanting loving homes. And, the costs are ususually very reasonable. Good luck!!

Beagles, retreivers, terriers, spaniels or any mix of these will work great as long as you give them plenty of playtime and excercise when you are home. A mature dog from a shelter or rescue will already be on the way to calm and trained as well as having their first vaccinations and sterilization (some even include microchips). The volunteers will also be able to help you choose the right companion based on personality/temperament for you and your lifestyle. Also, you'll be saving a life! Be sure and sign up for training classes so that you and your new friend can bond and learn together. BOL!

Adopt a dog from the shelter! There will be a bunch to chose from, and I'm sure any of them would love you!

Although, I do hope you realize that owning a dog can be pricey. You don't think it's a one time payment for the dog, and then no more money goes into it, do you? Dogs are a TON of money to own!

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, is what I would sugest. you can go here to save a rescued C.K.C. Spaniel: http://www.rescueinfocenter.com/index.php?c=Cavalier+King+Charles+Spaniel
below is the temperment of a C.K.C.S.:
"The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an eager, affectionate tail-wagger. Lively, outgoing and sportive. These fearless lively little dogs want to please. They are intelligent enough to understand what you want and therefore are usually easy to train and respond well to gentle obedience training. They are said to be naturally well behaved and get along well with other dogs and non-canine pets. Cavalier's love people and need lots of companionship to be happy. They should not be left alone all day. They are descended from hunting dogs and love to romp in the great outdoors. This breed sometimes displays a chasing instinct and should be kept well enclosed or leashed so he does not get lost or run over by a car! They do best with older considerate children and some can be reserved with strangers. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a pleasant companion dog. It has a noteworthy sense of smell and vision and can be used in short hunts in open country. They do well in competitive obedience."

I recently got a chihuahua puppy after MUCH research. I live in a studio apartment, so he is a great size - only a couple pounds, and he loves me to death. Chihuahuas are naturally little guard dogs too. They're small, but they don't know it. So they'll warn you when someone comes to the door, etc. This is good for me being a young female alone in a bad neighborhood. Purebread chihuahuas are pricey, though. I would suggest researching other small breeds very carefully. We are not well off but for me a chihuahua was the only way to go. I love the breed to death now especially after having one!

Go to a pound, look around - fall in love with one of the needy souls there. Pound dogs will thank you for rescuing them, and would not be up for adoption if they were not people friendly. Also, I'd stay away from a pure-bred, mixes are usually smarter.
