I think religion does a lot of bad things, and has a lot to answer for. But humankind has lasted this long with religion so I wouldn't think it was a threat. I'm a Christian myself, and I believe what the Bible teaches is true, but I don't think being a Christian has much to do with religion (depending of course on your definition of religion). It's not about rules and rituals, it's about knowing God.

In many ways I think that it is. There are too many "religious" people who are willing to take the rights, freedoms and (at times) lives from those who dare to believe something else. It never ceases to amaze me how many different groups preach love and goodness but then turn right around and start namecalling or worse when their beliefs are not shared by someone else. So even though I think there are many good people that are religious I think that religion as a whole (no matter what religion it is) is a bad thing. It turns too many people against each other instead of bringing them together.

I'm in total agreement.

Especially the Bible kind of religion that says that TRUE religion is to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, house the homeless, visit people in hospitals and prisons, help orphans and widows, et cetera.

Yup - Biblical religion is a true threat to humankind. You hit the nail on the head.

No, religion isn't the threat. Fanatical followers of religions yes. Good examples would be Muslim terrorists, Christians burning pagans at the stake, Hindus slaughtering Muslims (and vice versa) and that lady off that movie The Mist.

Yes, orthodox religions are a threat to mankind. They cause thought pollution.
The present Society based on scientific knowledge does not need religions.

Religion has been here since the dawn of time and we are still here. Religion basically gives us guidence in understanding the awe. Its people who abuse it and manipulate teachings to benifit themselves that makes things go wrong, and also when people take religion and instead of allowing its true exploritive nature change it and make it dogmatic. At one time in history in ancient times Religion and science were actually one and worked together. If you go back to the root teachings of the masters( authors of any religion embracing beliefe in the divine ) you will find all religions have the same loving messages but then someone comes along and changes the authors intentions or teachings and adds stuff and subtracts stuff and then its not the same spiritual religion anymore but a politically and fanatically writen peice of writting for the benifit of the greedy self absorbed new author. I would suggest if your interested in this subjuec to do homework and reserch all religions embracing beliefe in divine things and you will find something interesting, the original books ( the very first writtings by the spiritual author ) all have love and kindness *** the guide to human happiness. This will meen of corse that suprises come up like for instance, the bibles original writtings were arimaic and greek then went through many laguages and changes and on purpose sometimes. Then you also find that the bible is taken from earlier writting of pagan origin working its way back through Kabala and Jewish paganism and further back to Greco Roman Egyptin mystical shamanic magical practices and then you get to the original author in ancient times and find only that the spiritual teachings teach love and awe of the grand universe. This means that you will have to study some anthropology, archeaology, socialogy and religious studies with some linguistics to boot. Its all worth it for those who are really interested in the real true teachings of any religion. You can reserch this way on ancient Hindu teachings, Bhuddist, Shintoism, or any for that matter. Of course it means lots of work and reserch but knowing the truth is worth it. So instead of taking what others say and preach, do your own homework and dig deep to the root beginning of any religion by its spiritual author.

Certainly. All one has to do is read a history book and you will see that.
The Inquisition, Salem Witch trials are two examples.

Religion also tries to hinder any and all progress of science. Galileo was under house arrest for stating that the SUN was the center of our solar system.

Not just a threat but possible extinction cause. If everyone wouldn't judge or want to convert others it might have worked but now its only causing problems. i dont see us ever coming together to achieve other things like (space exploration) if we dont lose religion and come together as one.

No more so than anything else. Religions have promoted both good and bad things. There are all sorts of non-religious beliefs like Marxism, Nazism, fascism, nationalism, etc. which have been a blight on humanity.

No. I think dogmatic adherence to beliefs (which some religions require) is a threat.
