I'm going hunting with my husband in a couple of weeks. He says that when him and his dad go hunting they usually sit in some hut and wait till a feeder goes off, the deer come to the feeder expecting some tasty food and instead they shoot the deer. Is it just me or is that cheating?

My husband compares it to fishing, saying he is going "Deer Fishing" I think he is a retard. What are your thoughts?

Sounds corny to me.

Firstly, going out there any other way other then naked and just your bare-hands could be considered "cheating" from the deer's perspective, but going by the exact description you gave, sitting over a feeder would not be considered "hunting" to me. The rest of you who want to justify it by saying "you fish with bait so why not" are wrong as well. That is why they call that sport fishing and not "hunting fish". Hunting is about the chase or the stalk that leads up to the kill, not just the kill. Sitting in an enclosed shelter overlooking a feeder is called "killing". That's perfectly fine to replenish your freezer, which I've been known to do as well, but nobody really considers it hunting. Also, I'll accept the one comparison of a feeder being the same as an oak tree or cornfield only if there just as many feeders in the area as there are oak trees or the cornfield is only 10' x 10' !!! Be serious!!

The best way I can answer this is like this: Baiting game animals has a couple of advantages, first, for me, being handicapped, it allows me a chance to harvest an animal. Second, it allows the hunter to verify the animal he is taking. By that I mean, not a doe with a fawn, or that he can better judge the animal for health, size etc before shooting, and lastly, that it normally allows a hunter more time to make an accurate shot, without wounding an animal and causing it to suffer. Having said that, they only animal that I hunt over bait, is black bear. For all the reasons I listed above. Although handicapped, I still hunt deer the old fashioned way, I still hunt them. But I do a lot of pre season scouting to find the best area to hunt them, and I do sometimes stop and sit to watch a known area that they feed in, or move thru.

Where I hunt it is so thick that rabbits have to carry a knife to cut their way thru the thickets. That leaves this stalking thing out of the question, so we sit over game trails or around feeders. I had 2 cameras at feeders since October. I have taken over 1000 pics and only 5or6 or of bucks in daylight hours and 10-15 of doe in daylight hours. The rest came at night. Just because you hunt over a feeder doesn't mean you will see deer. I also agree with a previous answer in that I see no difference in hunting over a feeder than I do a green patch, corn field, oak. apple or persimmon trees. All of these are feeders either provided by nature or man.

I don't really agree with that kind of hunting, so I don't do it. It is a common practice so I can't really say anything without everyone and their uncle disagreeing. The one exception is if the person is disabled in some way. Like I saw a show the other day with a blind hunter, and that is what they were doing, and he ended up shooting a deer with help from his friend.

All depends on how you look at it. In many states, this is illegal. It is call hunting over bait and not fair chase. However, once you see it, you will realize it is not that simple. Some see this as no different than the fishing you mentioned. Some see it as no different than hunting near an oak tree (acorns), apple orchard, or a field of corn. It is all about perspective.

Well some people call it baiting and some states baiting is illegal.... it is all up to your states laws... it can be considered like cheating I guess.... but like your husband said with fishing.... you need bait to catch a fish right? So you need bait to catch an animal too.... you can look at it that way.... or look at it the other way of just stalking the animal in the woods, or sitting and waiting.... a few different ways of doing it.

well .. i dont really know we have a deer pile where we just put a bunch of corn to get them to come ever once in a while but a lot of times it doesnt go real well and we only do that in the winter... but i think it is a little and yes deer fishing is a tad retarded...

This isn't cheating, but in some states & provinces it is illegal to hunt over bait. Sounds like a nice hunt for you & your husband, good shooting.

I have still hunted ( from a tree stand & a blind ) , hunted with dogs, as well as walking a deer trail.
2 years ago, i had to have back surgery & have a difficult time walking any distance, so now i shoot over a feeder.
to make it easy to find a deer after taking a lung shot, i went from a .243, to a .300 H & H magnum. when you blow the deers head off, the body only goes sideways & you don't waste any meat
