Sony fatcats had discontinued it, because of cost reduction plan. They are saving around 30$ on each console plus installation expenses. They said, that it was done due to public request. They could just add 40GB version to the choice list of PS3 versions. Instead - they replaced it with 40GB console. And they force customers to buy PS2. That was their official statement. The 60GB is out of production and they did sell it at both places, but they may be sold out at your local stores. The 60GB PS3 is still on the shelf at many stores and on some retail sites. If you want it, I suggest you shop online.

The ps3 60gig version was discontinued and now there is only the 40gig and 80gig being made.

That's why the price dropped on the 60gig version, to get it off the shelves of stores. Once their gone from stock, stores will no longer have them available.
