Nope the only "assault rifles" you can legally own have to be California approved. No magazines over ten rounds. Bushmaster makes a CA legal AR 15 with a sealed mag well that you have to pull a pin raise the hinged upper and load 10 rounds into the internal magazine with or without a stripper clip from the inside close receiver and replace pin then chamber a round and fire. There are a number of things a CA rifles can't have more than 1 of I don't know if I remember all of them but, a pistol grip, a flash hider, a bayonet lug, detachable magazine, and a folding stock actually no rifle can have a folding stock in CA only shotguns. So it can only have one of these which pretty much scraps the AK 47 I don't know about the Dragunov. I think that's why we're seeing these retooled AK's coming over called Saiga's in which they remove the pistol grip and move the trigger back so it can use a more traditional stock setup retaining only the removable mag (10 round of course) as it's 1 allowed feature. CA is not a good state for gun enthusiasts. If I've forgotten anything, my apologies.

California Assault Rifle Laws

Assault rifles, as defined by the California Assault Weapon Ban, are illegal. There are a few ways to get a somewhat functional AR-15 in California, though. One step is to have a magazine that is only removable using tools. This may include a magazine that's pinned in the magazine well and reloaded through the top of an opened rifle, or a special magazine release that requires the use of a tool to open. Specific receivers eliminate the magazine well entirely, making the rifle a single-shot only affair. Other people have come up with special stocks which eliminate the pistol grip protruding conspicuously from the rifle.

Atlantic firearms has a section of rifles and shotguns that meet strict California regulations:

Listen to the Linguist for he knows of what he speaks.

Loose the term "assault rifle". Its bogus. You need to purchase a Class III firearm after you pay a $200 transfer tax to the ATF if you want an "assault rifle", because they are already illegal to buy/sell on the open market per legal definition. The ordinary semi-auto you purchase at Joe's Gun Emporium down the street is a rifle....just a rifle.

Now if you want your run of the mill, semi-auto rifle, the answer in the Soviet People's Republik of Kalifornia, is technically no. You can't purchase the same AR's and various rifles the free world of many other US States can purchase. In Kalifornia, it must have a fixed magazine capacity of ten-rounds or less and by fixed I mean internal fixed magazine...which is why your CCCP-version AR-15 will be top-loading.

Just want to re-enforce one key fact here. A semi-auto rifle by definition IS NOT an "assault rifle".

California is such a stupid state to get a gun in general
not only do you have to register pistols and grandfathered Semi-auto "Military assault rifle look-alikes" you also have to wait 10 f***ing days just to be able to pick up the rifle or registered pistol from the gun shop the waiting period. And the retarded 10 round limit law is still in place where most other states its expired and no longer a law.
You have to pass a safety course from the police just to get the handgun you bought which is an extra fee and hassle.
California is a stupid state for gun owners move to Arizona,Texas,New Mexico,Florida,or any other free state that recognizes the right to keep and bear arms and the right to protect yourself and your family.

In my state of Florida there is a 3 day waiting period for pistols and rifles no registration for handguns and rifles,no safety course to pass to get a handgun, and no stupid child safety lock requirement. You get the money tell the dealer what gun you want he fills out the info on the gun and asks for your driver license and makes a copy of it and then you get a form 4473 where you fill out your name, address, gender, weight, height, social security, place of birth, and a list which asks yes and no questions if you are a felon or mentally incompetent and stuff like that and once you are done you sign your name on the top second part of the form and then you pay the money you get a reciept and you come back in 3 business days and give the dealer the reciept and he gets the gun you bought you put it in the case and you sign a release form and then your good to go.

Its the same with rifle or visa versa only the age requirement is different its 18 for long guns and 21 for handguns.
You can get high capacity magazines with ease and the "scary" rifles and shotguns just as easy as any normal looking rifle or shotgun they are all the same action just different appearance.
Only place with a longer waiting period is Dade county near Miami which has a 5 day waiting period.
Thats how simple a gun purchase should be nationwide and how it should stay here in Florida.
I got a Marlin 780 .22LR bolt action rifle bought monday I will pick it up on Friday due to the 3 day waiting period which is no biggie compared to 10 crazy day waiting period in Ca.

You should check with your local police department in Kalifornia; most of the rest of the nation sees Kalifornia as a place where the police and bad guys (girls) are well armed and the subjects who live there are just victims waiting to happen.

Please do not use the term "assault" rifle. It only perpetuates the ignorant stereotype used by the liberal media that any long gun is meant for violence, and does not differentiate between bolt-action hunting rifles (which anyone can use), semi-automatic military-style rifles (which anyone can use) and fully-automatic rifles and machine guns (which you need special permits for.
