Just curious if anyone has ever made a poster out of one of their pictures, and if so how did you go about doing it?

I have some pretty good pictures that I would like to have made into posters on good poster paper about 11" X 14" or maybe 16" X 20". Thanks!

I would suggest you use a service like the one at adorama.com... even if you don't follow through and actually print the picture they have a little gauge when you start selecting pictures that will give you a clue as to whether your picture is big enough to be turned in to a specific size print. If you shoot in Raw and save the pictures as TIFF files you'll have better luck than trying to blow up jpegs... a big problem with jpegs is the amount of compression that is used to make them, different cameras compress to different degrees and some are so poorly compressed you lucky to get a 5 x 7 let alone a 8 X 10 or larger.

You need to find a local large printer, and call them up and ask about printing something. You will of course have to buy it from them, but first of all, if you're planning on printing big (poster size) you want to make sure that your photo will still be clear when printed in that size. If the photo is too small it will be very blurry.
16x20 is a pretty good size.

you need to make sure you have a high quality jpeg (usually 360 dpi). If you do, you can then resize the picture to the size you want it and take it to Kinko's or some place like that and they can print it off for you

I suggest using Photoshop, because you can work with the individual colors one at a time to make them more vivid or changing the Hues if you want. There are numerous things you can do with it. There is nothing you can add to make the photograph shiny or glossy , you just need to buy some glossy photo paper and experiment. You can do quite a lot with Adobe Photoshop if you have the imagination.

I've had jpegs enlarged to 24"x26" with good results, it depends on the quality and file size of the original. contact your local camerashop/developer if your going to spend the money for and enlargement it's worth having someone who knows what they are doing make it for you.
