I'm eating a giant jawbreaker (super good) right now and I randomly wondered why they're so darn hard. Can they be smashed with a hammer?

Holy crap people! I'm not stupid, so be nice. I want to know the process of what makes them hard. I already know they're called jawbreakers cuz they're hard!

If they were soft they wouldn't be called jawbreakers, and yes, they can be smashed w/ a hammer.

because if they weren't so hard, they couldn't be called Jawbreakers, and then they'd have to come up with a different name for their product now wouldn't they.

but mostly because they're just a ball of melted and cooled sugar - the hardness is a natural product of such a process.

Basically it is because they are made of several layers. Read the article at the site below which also explains what happens when you heat them in a microwave. Forget the hammer!!!! LOL

when you make candy, the sugar is melted and it caramalizes as it cooks. the longer you let it cook, the harder it is when you take it off the heat.
