resistance training is the single best type of exercise. it increases strength which protects the muscles, tendons and ligaments. by increasing muscle mass it stops the natural decrease of the metabolic rate. it increases the output of testosterone and growth hormone which has a very positive effect on cognitive thinking, the metabolism and health in general. it also increases bone mineral density which helps to fight osteoporosis, only weight bearing exercise does this so running, swimming, yoga, etc. do not have this effect. training at a high level of intensity also increases cardiovascular performance.

resistance training is the only form of exercise that accomplishes everything that is needed to keep the body functioning at optimumal levels of effeciency.

To lose weight?

High Intensity interval training/exercise I believe. Look it up online. Can be applied to many different types of aerobic exercise.

If your talking muscle, various exercises like the bench press or the squat.

EDIT: there is no such thing as spot reduction....you can't target weight in one section of the body, you'll lose it all evenly.
